Default Problem with losing voltage current

It seems like everytime I work on my Vette, the battery will drain down, and then will not charge properly. I was wondering where the typical problems are with shorts on Vettes. Is there anyway I can check the alternator to see if it is working right or the battery to see if it is being charged right?

You can remove the alternator & the battery & have your local parts store check them both.

You can do the trouble-shooting yourself with a VOM. A FSM will tell you what to look for. IMO it is a corrosion issue.

While the car is running, check the voltage at the battery with a meter.
If it reads 13.5 to 14.5 your alt. is probably OK. Charge the battery and check the voltage, if its not higher than 12 volts you had better go shopping.

It sounds more like a weak battery than anything else. A short is very unlikely, or you would have either blown fuses or burnt wires. You say it goes dead while you are working on it, so anything like underhood lights, interior lights, etc left on for extended periods of time?
