Call your local PD, they will tell you what the legal limit is and what types are legal and illegal. The law varies widely from state to state and city to city.
I did a google, window tint day before yesterday prior to having tint done, yesterday. There was a website that had the laws for every state. But all you really have to do is call around, the locals won't install illegal stuff, 'cause they can get shut down, and at the least they know the laws.
Don't know the law in your state, but just had my 92 coupe done. Have20% on the hatch and windshield strip and 35% on the sides. If I had to do it again, I would go with 20% alll around. Good luck.
If you want to know what 35% looks like, get the darkest sunglasses you can find and put them on at night inside your car. When I was in my 20's I could drive like that and see fine, now that I am a couple(ok, maybe more than a couple) years older; 20% is about the most I can see out of and be safe at night. There used to be a sight by some police dept., that showed what each type of tint looked like at night.
Also, in some states mirrored tint is legal to sell and illegal to have on your car(Florida for example). When I had my Monte Carlo, I had to keep my receipt to show that I bought my tint before the law went into effect.
When I got my car it already had that tinted film on all of the windows except the windshield. Let me tell ya, it was a pain to see out of. I removed the ones on the windows but, so far, I haven't touched the one on the hatch as I'm afraid to damage the heating elements of the rear defrost. No clue what the % is, but all I know is that I can't use the rear-view mirror because the hatch makes the whole view blurry.
Law says 35% here in NC. So that's what I did. Wish I gone to 20% in the rear though. I'm not sure if the shop would have done that or not. If your interior is black, 35% will look fine IMHO. Mine is grey so it doesn't apperar as dark. Lots of previous post and pictures on here about tint.
I live in Maui,HI and the legal tint here is 35%. I did 35 on my side windows and did 15 on the hatch since the guy that did mines didn't have 10% which I was gonna get. Here's some before and after pics of the tints.
I have 5% tint on every vehicle I own. Been that way for well over 10 years. NEVER been stopped for it. I have 3 policeman that live in my neighborhood including one that lives next door. No one has ever said a word about it.
its a 35 percent limit here in maryland and I have 20 percent on all of my cars. my wife got pulled over 1 time for speeding and they gave her a repair order for the tint rather than a speeding ticket. guess the 175 dollar re-tint wsa better than insurance going up and paying the speeding fine. other than that, i have had almost 11 years of good luck, knock on wood.
I've got 5% on my car because the guy I bought it from had it done that way (Florida...don't know the laws there). It LOOKS fantastic, but I was just thinking the other day that it is pretty damn dark...especially at night.
I'm not gonna change it out unless I'm stopped. But if that happens, I won't be brokenhearted.
Wow Florida lets you put welders helmet levels - 15%
Got it done yesterday..went 15%...it looks really great with a black car but now I'm kinda concerned that it might attract the law. Its a bit darker than I thought it would be. installer said he does alot at 15% and hasnt heard much bad feedback, and only state patrol seems to bother the few people he's talked to.
Anyway its on and I love it, just hope the cops let me be!
