I was about to order the outer weather strip for my passenger's side. The straight horizontal piece that goes along the top of the door/bottom on the side window. I think some call it a "felt" since the inside that touches the window has that felt texture.
Questions:
Before I order, is there a specific brand that is the best? I know everyone has their opinion on the squishy rubbery stuff on other parts of the car, but what about this?
Does anyone know a thread that gives good precise instructions on how to install? Do I have to remove the door panel? I've never done this. How hard is this pieceto install?
I've searched the C4 forums, but couldn't find any threads that are specific to this piece of stripping.
The thread below has installation directions on one of the pages. The vendor is also selling NOS GM outer wipes as a pair for $60 shipped. I don't think you'll even find the aftermarket brands that cheap. I ordered a set myself. The coupon code you need is in the thread somehwere http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1966017
I bought mine from Mid America and they are nice, I have heard Wilcox has nice stuff as well here on the forum and from a buddy. The door panel has to come off but the good news is the door glass doesn't have to be removed. You will need a rivet gun, a drill bit and some patience. You have to drill out the old rivets but you have to be careful you don't drill through the rivet and then right through the door. I chucked the drillbit down inside the drill quite a bit and put a 1/4 drive socket over it so I couldn't goof and drill right through the door.
i got my outer seals from mid america #604-609, yes you have to take the door apart and once you have it apart you will find rivets holding the old seal together. you have to drill the rivets out, but dont go to deep or you will drill through the door , clean up the area then install the new ones, i used stainless screws and not rivets to installthe new seals. then put the door back together. not to difficult of a job, just take your time
I took the door panel off. Was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I do have one question that other thread talked about.
You have to slip the top inside part othe door panel over these flanges to hold it to the door. My car is a 1994, btw. What about the front part of the panel that meets with the fuse box when the door is shut? That part seems loose...even with the door panel on, I can bend it and stick my hand inside the front part of the door. It is supposed to be like that?
Also, I have been trying to fix a rattle I can't seem to find. It seems to be coming somewhere from inside the passenger's door. It goes away when I roll down the passenger's window. It's a "flapping" noise. That's the best way I can describe the noise. In otherwords, it doesn't sound like I have a loose tiny piece rattling or bouncing around inside the door. It's more like a flat panel flapping against something.
Got mine from Ecklers, not expensive, factory quality. Took an afternoon. Don't try to do without dropping the window glass, save lots of time and trouble by marking the locations of pads first before unbolting/screwing glass, use small drill head unit so you don't slip and damage edge.
The willcox parts were excellent and fit perfectly and inexpensive. Fairly easy job to do, but you'll need a rivet gun. I used a $10 cheap-o and it worked fine.
