Default Bogs on stomp

Hi all,

I've got a 1988 L98, auto, and while driving it home tonight, I tried to stomp it a little off the line @ the lights. It seemed to somewhat choke and bog down a little for a second before taking off. Kinda would make me look a bit stupid if I tried to drag a car (luckily i don't usually). It does this occasionally when i stomp on the accelerator, but not all the time. What could be the problem?

Thanks all!

Is the engine and setup stock?
What is base timing? Should be 6deg BTDC.
Are you launching off idle? If so try launching at say 1,000rpm.

Check the TPS setup.

Indeed it could be an injector issue but I'd eliminate the low $$ items first. I recently replaced injectors to fix just such an intermittent bog problem, after I had eliminated other potential causes.

Was your gas tank low?

Could be the fuel filter is clogged - when's the last time you replaced it?

Just basic suggestions - could be more in depth.

I would also suspect the fuel filter, mine had the same bog down from a stop sign or red light and a new fuel filter took care of the problem.

Thanks for the replies all! I'll answer the questions I can, i'm not very mechanically minded as my father usually takes care of most things for me (i'm 21 and hes a mechanic :S).

The engine is stock setup as far as i'm aware, sure feels stock. Not sure about the timing, would have to check that. I believe im launching off idle, although idle in the car seems to be around 800-900 RPM...

Fuel read around 80km left in the tank, which is round 55 miles for conversion sakes (although at a really low mpg of around 13?). I've never replaced anything in the car since i've owned it except the brake booster, had it for around 2 years and its only a weekend car (i have a crappy 4cyl runaround car for all other needs). It also seems like it has a slight miss in the engine when the engine is running warm, doesn't seem like its making full power, if that has any bearing on the result. I've looked into another few threads with the same problem but have yet to get around to doing the checks...

Thanks so far!

Fill up your tank and try your launch again. It won't cost you anything more than gas and may save you from chasing gremlins if it's just a fuel starvation problem.

Just my .02 - I don't let my tank get below 1/2. The fuel pump is gas cooled, so it can shorten the life of the pump.

You said it was low, it could be fuel sloshing around and that's why it bogged after a quick jump. Does it bog down when the tank is full?

Change the filter - it should be located under the passenger side rail beneath about the door seam. I'm not sure if your vette is converted to RHD based on the year and since you're down under, so I don't know if they moved the fuel lines to the opposite side.

I'd be more concerned about 13 mpg. That's pretty low. You might have other issues that need to be diagnosed. I'd look into that.

Here's a quick how to on changing the fuel filter. Even the mechanically challenged can tackle this job.

Good luck,

Default check your spark plug harness

Had a similar issue missed during hard acceleration and during any engine loading. Ops normal at cruise. Turned out to be a plug wire that chafted on the header. Shorty headers w wires routed underneath.

Thanks for the help Matthew. I'll put some fuel in it when I get paid and see how it acts with more fuel in the tank. I can't recall if it bogs down while full, have to test this theory out.

Cars still LHD so shouldn't be a problem checking where you say. I'd say my low MPG is due to me doing a lot of 'city' driving, plus keeping it in first drive. The engine tends to run rather crappy at low RPM in the second drive on the auto, since roads in Aus are low speed (30-37 MPH), I prefer to use a nicer but more fuel expensive gear.

All i know is the car doesn't feel like it has the stock 240HP it claims. Something wrong with the car which I haven't had the time or money to look further into. I guess that's the problem you face when you own an expensive import, parts are more expensive, and me not having a full time job also makes it a little difficult! Haha but that's all part of the fun.

Need to get my hands on a FSM and run through it and do all the tests i can!

Thanks for your help!

Jarrad -

There is an australian devoted corvette site, I can't think of the name of it off the top of my head. You might want to check there for some local guys. If you google it, I'm sure you can find it. Otherwise I could try to dig it up.

Just an idea.
