Hey guy's,i'm in Canada and i want a radar for next summer but i would like to no how reliable is it and for how many years can i use it for.My buddie told my valentime radar is very good.I like to speed but i dont want to get caught. Thanks guy's
Valentine seems to be the one most people use. Supposed to be the best but it is not a license to speed, use with caution. You still can get instant on zapped, etc. I'd have one but I have a vert making it a PITA to remove and hide everytime I park. I had a passport with another vert and forgot once after a month and it was gone. $400+ a pop US is to much to loose this way.
Escort 8500>>>>>>saved my butt many times!!!!!!!!!! Have had others but this one is the real deal: Anti-falsing is sweet on this one...>>>cuts the crap but picks up 5-0 from un-real curve's , bend's and distance>>you won't be dissapointed....... :D :D :D :D :D :D
The handheld guns are the easiest to use, but don't usually have the range of the larger units.
This company http://www.emrad.com/ makes some high dollar ground-penetrating units if looking for buried objects is more for you.
Of course, Honeywell ( http://www.flwsradar.com/ ) has been manufacturing radar for weather detection for years. I'm sure that one of the airplane based units could be shoehorned into a ground vehicle pretty easily.
As always, though, be careful. Alot of these units operate with very high power and could easily blind you, if not fry you if you inadvertently put yourself in front of the antenna.

Re: RADAR (crazyC4)
I bought a $250 radar detector about 8 years ago. It picked up all bands and laser. The first weekend after I got it, I was traveling home in Colorado and got pulled over. I got a ticket. The radar didn't go off. A month later I was traveling through Arizona around Flagstaff and got pulled over again. This time as the trooper was writing up my ticket, I jokingly said to him, "I've got this fancy new radar detector that picks up everything and it never went off. What did you catch me with." I forgot what he called the system but basically it's a calibrated clock in the patrol car and they timed me going through two reference points.
For the first 4 years, I got sick of the annoying squeal when it started up, and the annoying squeal when others passed with radar detectors, and the annoying squeal when I got near many stores. It's enough to drive you nuts. More false alarms than you can shake a stick at. It now sits in the console compartment. I haven't used it in the last 3 or 4 years. It was top of the line back then and it was a complete waste of money.
Just my experience. I'm sure others have had good experiences and can relate those.
whats the point ?? most RCMP use Laser to catch ya now and they only turn the laser on when they wanna hit ya with it and turn it off right away so any radar detector that says its detecting laser it means you just got caught speeding theres no real point in a radar just drive slow a valentine is big bucks when ya convert to canadian dollars. just don't speed so much it will help with getting no tickets and it might keep you alive.....
I've read that the valentine is over priced junk. Big and bulky, close to 10 years old. That is from one of the websites that tests radar detectors, not just me.
That being said I have a real cheap one, it's a Cobra that I bought from a friend. I got it REAL cheap, but it really does a good job. Sure it has a good deal of false alarms in the city, but I can always turn it off. It's also hyper sensitive on the highway which is a good thing, it hasn't saved my butt yet, but it saved the previous owner a number of times.
As for the instant on stuff, that will always get you. Your only prayer on that one is if the road is just perfect and they clock somebody a few cars ahead of you. I mainly bought it for the looks of it, just another neat gadget. I mounted it in the upper left of my windshield, you can't see it from the outside. For power I went into the A-pilar and tapped the wires for my gauges, that way I don't have crap going to my lighter and such. Overall it's a real clean installation, but it's still just held up with suction cups so I can get rid of it quickly if need be.
Has anybody noticed the huge number of Geo Metro's and other little complete POS cars that have radar detectors in them? I mean come on, what's the point.
BTW, a radar is actually somewhat effective around here because the Sheriffs are too lazy to turn their radar off. If there is a Sheriff anywhere near you, you know it. I mean they even leave it on when they are not in the car.
The OPP frowns on radar detectors and you will donate it to them if you get caught. VG2 is going to be your main concern as the cops have radar detector detectors. I hear Valentine One is good for VG2 and Escort is not bad. I have had an Escort 4600 for about 5 years and swear by it however I am considering a V1 as I like the directional indicators. Good luck! I'm a transplant from Toronto. Great to see Canadians in the forum!
I quit using them years ago. They go off when you pass near places that have alot of communication devices and the cops in this area turn their radar on and off alot while cruising. You can spend the big bucks on the Valentine unit or one of the others, but I hook up my cb and talk to the truckers when I just have to make tracks. Nothing is foolproof, but I guarantee that when the officer sees the unit, you're out of excuses. When an officer stops you just remember that he doesn't start writing till you stop talking, so if you do get stopped have a bag full or excuses. Good luck :smash: :smash: :smash:
I run a phamtom radar detector and jammer. It detects and jams both radar and laser. I don't drive that fast , but 10 over the limit will get you a ticket in a vette. I know it has saved me 4 times. unit cost about $300.00 dollars. :yesnod:
Im just using my new toy for around town driving since its an automatic. My road car is a modified Ferrari GTO. Nothing beats having police scanner and CB radio. The scanner beeps like a detector if there is any police radio transmitting within a few miles. :yesnod:
The thing to get is a laser jammer. not exactly legal, but not illegal either, kinda in the gray area inbetween. Just consists of a jammer unit that has to be placed in plain sight of the road on the front of the car. It comes with a liscense plate frame that is fairly unobtrusive. And they work like a hot damn! ALso it is a permanent mount with only a mini light and a piezo siren inside, so nothing to steal.
hmm cops confiscate radar detectors in florida? hahaha..... ahh thats funny........they are perfectly legal here in canada from what i know. its like why do they sell em in big electronics stores if they aren't legal?
where'd ya get a jammer?! thats what i totally want! but i hear in canada the jammer is illegal.... crappy thats what i really want i run a whistler 1600 series radar detector right now. you got any info on this jammer detector??
Ya I got lots of info on the jammer. We sell them at the store I work at. what do you want to know? Actually, just go to their web site http://www.k40.com.
Thanks guy's,just trying to be safe for the summer when summer comes my vett is not going slower than 200km. :reddevil So this is like christmas shopping,so the jumper is better than a radar.Well in Canada they are both illegal.
>>Has anybody noticed the huge number of Geo Metro's and other little complete POS cars that have radar detectors in them? I mean come on, what's the point.<<
Well those cars can go over 70 mph too.....it just takes 90 seconds to get there
:D

Laser Jamming is not illegal :nono:
Radar Jamming IS :yesnod: (but there is no unit available)
The V1 is the choice of most on the CF, more at http://www.valentine1.com
Nathan, you've been on the CF long enough to know about the V1, why do you say those things...they are not true...GUMPA
