Default Headlight Headaches....

Someone, somewhere, tell me what the heck is wrong with my headlights. They will not lock up at night, when I need them. Always drift down, and will not stay up. If I work on them during the day, in my garage, they work fine. If I check them out with the ignition off, they work fine. I oil the mechnisms in case they are having a hard time operating, but that does not seem to be it. One of them has the gear still turning when they are done going up or down, but I can't seem to find out what to fix, replace, or junk. If someone has a solution, please let me know.
I am sick of driving with one, or no headlights.
P.S. I have owned a 70 vette for 35 years, with vacuum headlights, and never had a problem.
I also have a C5. But, this 89 is giving me problems I don't know how to deal with. Thanks, in advance.

Sounds like the plastic bearings have gone out. I hate these stinking headlights...

I suggest replacing the plastic gears with the bronze units. They've helped alot for mine.

Thanks for the info. Are they tough to replace?

Not at all. I can do both of them in about an hour now. Took about two and half the first time I did it.

Very easy to do! I replaced mine which were sagging with the Nylon replacements and it fixed all the issues. Make sure you buy the LARGE gears. The small black ones hardly ever go out according to a couple of past posts in the archives.

Hardest part is pulling the motor apart and even that was a piece of cake. Close to 2 hours for me and a $23 part and I had perfect working headlights again.

I understand the gears, but what's up with the bushings?
Do I replace these at the same time, or is this another issue?
I read online about this. Not sure I get it all.
One guy says get the bronze gear so it will never wear out, I agree.
But, another says just replace the bushings. Which is it?
