It all Started With Speaker Covers
I got to looking at my vett and thought, "man those speaker covers really look bad, I am going to paint them."
So I get my special plastic paint, remove them and painted them, still looks kind of bad, I know ill recover them. I bought 3 yards of Black Vinyl (twice 1 cheap that was impossible to work with and then the really good leather looking stuff.) after 3 attempts they looked ok.
Then I said to my self, "Self you still have some vinyl , you should recover your door panels," so I rip off the old carpet (red) and after 4 attempts got the black vinyl on. It looked bad, very very bad. I tried to patch them with trim…looked worse
In getting the door panels off I needed to remove the Plastic Rocker Panels and other trim . After dropping one and breaking it twice and gluing (twice). It only took 5 attempts of sanding and painting to change the color from red to black. They look pretty good.
Then I said to my self "Self you cant have black trim and red seats, you have some vinyl left you should recover them." (see a trend yet?)
After skinning part of one seat I quickly realized I was WAY over my head and I have found one more thing I have NO talent for.
To re cover them professionally upwards to (sit down) $700-$1400! (damn corvette tax)
I know ill purchase after market seats, Hello E bay. I win the bid on black leather racing seats and after 7 days was e mailed they were damaged and he would upgrade me to the next kind of seat, cool, another 4 days another e mail they are out of stock till 05/29. (of course) Got a refund.
Went to Pep Boys and purchased 2 after market 3 A racing seats for $125.00 a piece.
Problem solved (or so I thought) The UNIVERSAL Seats, None of the bolts match up so I need to re drill and add steel supports to my floor (project on going)
So now on to the door panels (again)
I called my supplier for all things corvette and new panels were $500.00 a PIECE! Used $300.00 A PIECE!!! OCHIE MOCHIE! (more corvette tax)
After picking my self up off the floor and being able to breath again, The rep suggested I go get some Auto/ Marine Carpet. Made some calls found it got @ .89 sq ft.
Go and purchase 3 yards Cut the panels and still have not attached. (stay tuned it is this weekends project)
Then I noticed my Gas pedal is broke (I have no idea how a gas pedal can break must be all the Chevy power) After calling the corvette supplier (I know I never learn) a USED pedal was $85.00! Luckily found one on e bay for $30.00 it is now on it's way from VA.
Then I said to my self "Self you still have carpet left you should see what it would look like in the car," (man I never learn)
So I pull out the deck lid carpet, cut a piece for the Divers side rear fender, Not half bad…so I proceeded to remove all the carpet (I mean what the hell the seats are out) Once again this part is on going. This should be funny.
So now what started to be cleaning and painting my speaker covers has now turned into a full blown interior replacement!
part 2…..
After buying 6 more yards of carpet, (my mind says sure that enough 36sq ft after all this isn't a 59 cadi it’s a little corvette) I recut the trunk and fenders using a molded carpet that came out of it on a flat carpet, not the easiest way for sure, and the electric scissors were replaced by a $1.50 razor knife. (enter gloating wife here)
AHH the Gas Pedal has arrived from E bay YEAH! This should be easy, (famous last word) as you all know I am a big guy and nothing gives your wife more to laugh about than getting stuck under your dash with your feet in the trunk. It was not easy but it is in.
Back to the carpet I remove all the rest of the plastic trim paint it, looks good I cut the seat support wall, and the transmission well sides, under the dash, actually looks good, I say to my self "Self this is going good maybe I am better than I thought, you'll be done in time for the race" (bad thought to have)
Opps need more carpet go buy 6 yards cut One seat well and Dash trim…out of carpet again….another trip to the carpet store where I get the greeting "isn't this your 4th trip here this week" yeah yeah
Time for the seats Their Universal this should be easy…..well 1st off they do not fit on Corvette brackets no way no how (goodbye power seat) , ok fine I'll bolt them to the floor. Measure drill 1 hole drill 2 holes, drill 3…drill dies….awesome…... 2 hour break……ok drill charged finish hole 3 and 4
DING DING DING let the wrestling match begin…..after many new curse words, many many cuts and bruises to my hands I get 3 of the 4 bolts in. (good enough safety be damned!) sit in the seat ….my chest is in the steering wheel….ok ill move the seat back…..oh crap it is back….Awesome
Passenger seat goes in not near as hard but far from easy…..
Ok we can deal for now lets got for a test run, The new "universal seat" has bound the seat belt…awesome (of course I pass 3 cops in 2 miles)
Remove drivers seat again….. REdrill 1 hole drill 2 holes, Drill dies…Great googly moogly (I'm going to watch the race!)
Let it charge Over night hit it a 6 am on Tuesday morning, finish holes and only 2 line up……re drill 2 of the holes …you guessed it Drill Dies…Get a screw driver and a big hammer……holes installed !
Seat goes in is fairly comfortable, seems stable, ok cool, seat belt works, ok
NOW Here is the funny part! I needed to touch up some of the vinyl that was scratched in the wrestling mach…I get Duplicator Cloth and Vinyl paint. Stuff works awesome. So I say to my self "self you need floor mats just paint your old ones it says it's for CARPET and Vinyl"
They actually look great.. So for all this trouble I could have painted my interior for about 60 bucks……
Next paint and body work, installing bumpers, building an instrument bezel, converting a digital dash to analog, and next season we are going to install a 383 stroker with duel 4 carbs.
Awesome!

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
here is what i wish i would have done. If it is just faded Duplicolor Fabric and Vinyl paint is Amazing Stuff! and it would have been so much easier to take all the carpet out and paint it (or mask off the car really really good)
I understand.Actually, along with the update pics could you also try the duplicolor on a swatch of your old carpet and let us know how it really works. You're not the only one wanting to change from red carpet interior...

haha

Now go see what you can do under the hood with the rest of your time!
