i have a early 86, the window has been opening and closing fine, now when you try to open the window, you can hear the motor running in the door but the window will not come down, and while the window is up if you push the switch to raise the window you can also hear the motor, do i need a new regulator or just a window ribbon. and how much of a pain on a scale of one to ten is it going to be to replace, any thoughts will be helpful. and does the window have to be removed? thanks
Sounds like your plastic fantastic ribbon gave up the ghost. You might want to go over the steps thoroughly before you break into the door. It can be frusturating but it's possible. Also, the window may need readjustment once you start messing with the regulator assembly. While you're in there, might be a good time to go whole way and replace the window guides, outer door window strip, lubricate the door lock assembly and get any accumulated junk out of the door.
Biggest time killer will be making sure not to break those plastic clips holding the door lock/ opening actuators to the inside panel, along with making sure the window is properly aligned on reassembly. This may be of some help.
Sounds like your ribbon is done. Good time to switch to the newer regs. I did mine a few weeks ago, before mine broke.
The ribbon is a bit cheaper, though.
The early window regs are junk,do yourself a favor and switch to the later style.Corvette Recycling had them for $99 shipped, this is for an OEM part. This same part anywhere else is $300.
When I replaced mine, the guy at the parts store took me to the HELP rack and said here ya go. He handed me the ribbon and on the package it said fits most Chrysler cars. At first I thought he was an idiot, but it was the right one.
