I wish I could get Pete K to move to Ohio, I tried hiring him but I think he was afraid his job description would include working on my car.

At least a few deep, and std 10mm sockets.
10mm flat wrenches and 10mm ratcheting wrenches
seems like a lot of 10mm fasteners

I bought a set of ratcheting end wrenches and like Don (biggrizzly), the 10mm and the 7mm have more than paid for the whole set.

From the C4 technical FAQ:

Tools

A good set of tools is required for working on these cars. A nice 100+ piece Master Mechanics set from Sears (Craftsman) is a great start!

Also, you should have:

A small hand pump for removal and addition of fluids
Digital Volt Meter (DVM) and test light for debugging electrical glitches.
1/2" drive, 17mm allen head socket. This is used to remove the drain and fill plugs on a ZF6spd. These can be VERY tight.
Breaker bar
Pry bars

I keep a small tool kit in my "wallet". AAA membership, and a few good credit cards. Keep your cell phone charged up.
