Default Surging on Acceleration

I am finally am trying to address my acceleration issue. Basically, at full throttle, it feels really underpowered and then BAM! I'm also really off on my gas mileage (14 on the highway). I checked the plug wires (which are about 5 years/20K miles old) and at least one has hit something hot and melted through. Would this be wholly responsible for my issue? I guess I am going to pull the plugs to. I tested the fuel pressure and that seems good. I replaced the filter sock on the fuel pump. I'll check and clean the throttle body. TPS is set to .54

What else should be checked? Any suggestions for plug wires/plugs?

Check your injectors!. Check the ohms.

Its possible that wire is the culprit. I don't think ohming the injectors will turn up anything. The 85s had bosch injectors and the coils are not prone to failure like the multecs of later years (according to jon at fuel injector connection).

You could have a clogged oxygen sensor. Try parking on a level spot, run the engine up to 2000rpm and hold it there for 2 minutes to burn out the deposits.

Doubt it's fuel unless the pump is bad - acceleration takes place because you're adding air, so start with something simple like the air filter - capture some data with a scanner to see what the MAF is sending - and you could make sure the fuel filter was clean, though if that was plugged up, it'd probably wouldn't go anywhere.

Might want to check for a clogged cat too. When mine on my truck collapsed it ran like a dog. Gas mileage and acceleration where no where to be found. New cat and I had a whole new truck.

filter is relatively new...and there are no cats to worry about.
i guess i need to get that windows diagnostic program and start reading charts too...
the thing thats got me stumped is that once i've stood on the pedal long enough, it runs like a champ.....until the next time i go to acclerate.
