I do, in fact I did it so much that it sprouted a clutch and two extra gears. ;)
I've driven auto's and done it on occasion, can be fun, but for racing I would just leave it in drive. There is a guy in our local car club who swears he can outshift the computer. His 409 hp gets him all the way to a 12.7 We have no idea what it runs if he lets it shift itself, he's never let it do it. There is a guy with the same mods who runs 11's. He lets it shift itself.

How in the world do you "outshift" a computer? :) Moving the shifter to the next gear is still going to create the same situation as the computer telling it to shift. Right? He should let the computer do it so that it does it at the right time.

That's what we keep telling him. The story gets better. He claims it won't shift and he'll go down the track hitting the rev limiter. This is because for some stupid reason if you try to shift it manually on his car it WON'T shift anymore. Now he's on his third tranny and claims he has never tried to shift this one manually but it still won't shift. Never acts up on the street though ;) A friend finally got the chance to drive the car without the owner present. Sure enough, it works PERFECTLY if you let it shift itself, the moment you try to shift it yourself it will go all the way to the rev limiter and never shift.
The owner is just an idiot. I'm glad to see that you picked up on that instantly Scorp.
Oh and to make it better he talks trash to everybody and never backs it up. He gets on everybody's last nerve real quick. About this time last month he suddenly decided he's going to run 9's. I finally had enough and so did about everybody else.
Yes, I do. It is actually necessary. I couldn't afford to have the tranny rebuilt by a Chevrolet dealership, so I had a 'reputable' tranny mechanic rebuild it.
Now the tranny shifts too early... way too early. However shifting it manually is very fun. With all this, I still get around 26.8 miles per gallon average during a 120 miles per day trip to work and back.
Hopefully I can get the mold problem under control soon and start driving it again.
When I want to have fun on stay in a broader power band I keep mine in 2nd.
Also if I'm racing and the other car might beat me, I just keep it a bit extra in 2nd to 3rd, up to around 4900rpm, then put it in 3rd, it'll shift up at around 5-5100rpm. If I keep it in 'D', it would upshift to 3rd at around 4400rpm. Too early for me as the car pulls strong till about 5200rpms. To tell the truth though, I don't even watch the tach, I can tell pretty much by the sound how the engine is doing, and how much to let it stay in a gear. At my last race in Monroe, CT. where RT25 becomes a 3 lane Highway from a stop light (perfect for racing at night). I Kept it in 2nd till 4900, and 3rd till it ran out of breath. (Can't recall the speed really, and don't wanna post BS). Lets just say the '95 RX7 TT was about 2 car lengths behind me when I let up after winding out 3rd. Im Guessing about 115Mph or so. Dunno Can't wait to get the engine back together after my 'clean up'.
ALso need some new rears to go to the track with. Dunno what to get yet.
I manually shift the auto 100% of the time. I have been manually shifting automatics in vettes for over 120Kmi and have had no adverse effects from it. Sure it may reduce trans life a little, but it makes driving the car a whole lot more fun. My current vette has been manually shifted since about 24Kmi and I just got it to 93Kmi this weekend. No problems.
I actually got used to it when I changed my gears to 3.73's and was forced to do so because the trans was up-shifting way to early. I have since (after the 70Kmi mark) reprogrammed the computer to correct this problem, but I got used to shifting manually and rather enjoy it.
How do you go about adjust the cable to make the tranny shift later? Is there somewhere in a Chiltons on Haynes manual that would help me in doing this?
Most of the time I just set and forget via OD mode. Sometimes, I'll shift from D to OD when approaching highway speeds. I wish I could have bagged a six-speed, but muh feet's too big!
It's your car, drive it like you want to drive it. Don't worry about what other people think unless there is a factual reason to do otherwise. Read the owner's manual, if they don't say anything to the contrary, shift it like a manual if that's what you want to do.
If you want to race it, by all means, talk with folks that race Corvettes with automatic transmissions. They have the experience.
