I think that C4s are as reliable as any comparable GM car. My '93 has been pretty good, I've driven it daily for the last several years. My FIL has a Lumina of the same vintage, my MIL has a 1994 Grand Prix, and my C4 has been no worse than their cars. The only problems I've had were an ignition module that needed replacing, and a hose that burst before I replaced all the hoses. When the hose burst, it killed the optispark, which I had to replace. The opti is an expensive fix, but as long as you keep your cooling system maintained proactively to avoid leaks, you should be fine. After owning two LT1 cars I personally feel that the optis should be good for at least 100K miles, provided they stay dry.

Also, most things on a Corvette are easy to reach and repair. You can change an alternator in about 10 minutes. Try that on garden-variety GM front-wheel drives. I do all the maintenance myself, including changing out the opti. About the only Corvette-specific expense that I've encountered is tires, if you haven't bought tires for a performance car before, you can be in for a bit of sticker shock.

BTW, It's nice to see another piedmont-dweller! (I've lived in Davidson Co. most of my life).

With the high quality parts they were built with and the level of engineering that went into them, I was hoping that their reliability would be better than other comparable GM cars.

Yeah, we've had problem free cars for a number of years and I've grown accustomed to that.
We've had 3 new Buicks...all problem free.
I have also had a Ford Expedition for the past 8 years.
In 8 years all I've done to it is put one set of brakes on it.
It has been completely problem free and has run flawlessly every time I turn the key.
A fellow can get used to that level of reliability after a few years.

I'm presently restoring a '68 Chevelle 396.
I have a large, roll away tool chest and know how to turn a wrench, so I think I'll be okay in that department.

Kudos to a fellow Piedmont North Carolinian.

Thanx.

$6100 bought my '88 in the middle of winter, which is what you should try to do to get the best price.

I remember you looking last year (+/-). There are many nice examples of exactly what you want out there. If you settle for something less than what you really want, you'll think about it every time your butt hits the seat.

I wanted an A4 C4 because I have a Muncie in my '71.

IMHO, the best C4 for the price is an '89 6 speed coupe (digi-dash), followed by '90/91, and then any LT-1 coupe with mileages in the 50-75k range.

That being said, there are great deals on many L98 C4s coming up this winter for even less money.

You'll have to be vigilant, and be the first one there with cash money.

Good Luck finding what you want.

Bought my 94 in 2001 with 50k on it. Only failures I have had (knock on wood) was this spring a leaking water pump took out the opti. Other than that just minor keep up things.

It depends.

I had an auto 88 bought it with over 110K on it, changed all fluids when I got it.
Only maintenance in ovet 30K miles was tune up and cleaning all the crap out of the radiator. Ex sold it and the kid that bought it trashed it.

I now have a 92 with just over 100K on it, I know i've spent too much on maintenance items and too much time getting it right. I'm looking forward to getting it to the reliability of my 88.

haha, dzien dobry formul89!

Do you have some roots in Poland?

As to the Vettes - just found one '89 for sale in Warsaw where I live. I think I'll try to take a closer look at it on the weekend (seen C4 several times, but never drove one).
The main issue for me is, that while I'd love to have a lot of fun with a car, I still want it to be a daily driver.
Well, we'll see.

I got my 1995 with 74K on the clock. I put a new battery, wheels and tires and radio system in it. I'm not scared to drive it 20 or 200 miles. It's a reliable machine.
