Doing the u-joints on my 89. Was making some strange noises from the rear, anyway followed the thread I found on here and got the rears off without many problems. On the drive shaft, do I have to loosen, move or take out the tranny support? It looks like there might be just enough room to squeeze it out. I have the rear exhaust out, the back cat on up still in. Will this stuff have to be yanked as well?
If you mean the C beam then yes it has to be moved out of the way. Take the four bolts out and just push it to one side and if I remember right the dif can be pushed back a little to remove the drive shaft. A little side note some oil will spill out of the trans when the drive shaft is removed.
I did not have to remove or loosen the C beam when I did the driveshaft u-joints this spring. I was able to work the driveshaft out and back in without issue.
I think I can slip it in and out but it sure looks like its gonna be a close fit. I knew if anybody would know you guys would. Gonna keep my fingers crossed and give it a try this weekend.
After cutting out about 3/16 strip of the seam/flange that is in the tranny tunnel next to the shaft, she popped right out! Should have her back and running tonight. Took the 71 out for a nice long drive yesterday and my left front brake caliper started leaking. Eventually only had emergency brake....which wasn't much to start with.
Crept home at about 15 mph. Now I know what my next project is.
WOW got the 89 back on the road last night, did not think u-joints would make that big of a difference but WOW I sure can tell a big change in the cars handling. The spicers I took off did not look that bad. Put precisions(Usa) on it. Did not want to go with chinese ones from auto zone.
