Earlier this year I backed base timing down from 10deg BTDC to the stock 6deg BTDC and now run regular fuel with no problem at track or on the street...
well i run 91oct but i have used 87oct no problems but i could feel the diffrence, i dont run ethanol beacuse i prefer all that "crap" to stay in my tank and i dont want to change the fuel filter 4 times in the next week. trust me i have seen it before if your car hasent been run with ethanol "crap" collects in the tank and then when you use ethanol all it goes threw you fuel system and engine, from what i understand its the higher alcohol content which cleans out you whole fuel system. which can be a good thing, dont get me wrong i encourage everyone to use ethanol (my father is a farmer) and it works great but for my vett 91 is what i use i see no use to go any higher i have tried and couldent feel the diffrence. but thats all IMHO.
I don't see it as a waste of money as generally out here the difference between regular and premium is only about 3%; so if you get 1 extra mile per gallon out of it your ahead of the game. Also, 3% more per year to MAYBE protect the car is one of the cheapest insurances/assurances I can think of to help keep the car MAYBE running a little cleaner. I look at it as a 5-6% jump in octane for only 3% more in price, a win in my opinion.
Gas is gas.........by the cheapest. The knock sensor will retard the timing if theres pre detonation. A little power loss thats it. Think slow burn as opposed to a fast burn or pre-
detonation. The engine "pings" cause hot spots in the combustion chamber are pre-igniting
the fuel before TDC.
I burn 87......$3.26 it used to be .15c soon it will be $4.26 and then $5.26
Premium is a dinosaur
Power and hence mileage loss. Also, if it retards the timing from detonation, there might be the issue of cumulative damage from a bit here and a bit there.

How did you determine "no problem"? Did you check knock counts?
Stay away from cheap gas stations and stick to Shell Chevron 91+ octane.
I buy from a Shell station by the University where all the BMW and Volvo professors buy their premium at.
I know the gas is turned over and we have ethanol in all the gas.
It gets old quick and ethanol attracts water so use sta bul if it's getting put up for the winter months.
You should use at least plus all the time for better performance and better mileage.
You should see the looks I get when I pull in there in my 95 w/383 fully forged LT 4 450 HP beast that idles like a Top Fuel Car.
I even wear a TCU tee shirt when I go there.
I quit filling up unless I am going some distance.
I have been burned with gas going bad in both my vettes 3 times now. Not from Shell though.
