Default UPS Damaged Top !

I shipped a top professionally boxed up and the end user told me it came in Cracked. The Initial UPS person ,after they inspected it,told me that they won't honer my claim of $500.00. They told me an adjuster would be in touch with me since I contested it.
Anyone have a similar problem with UPS damaging their goods?

Stuff gets damaged every day during shipment. That's why you have insurance.

It's not just a UPS problem, it happens with any shipper.
With the volume of goods being moved every day around the world, it's a wonder anything gets through undamaged.

I never ship via UPS for this very reason - bad experience during the claim process. FedEx is GOLD when it comes to shipping and claims. Never had a claim denied, not once. I shipped 4 Camaro wheels via FedEx a while back and the receiver got but 3 of them. Minor paperwork, claim settled. FedEx value the customer, UPS not so much.

Yeah, big brown is only good for shipping crap you don't care about like dirty diapers and foam peanuts. Fed Ex ground is better, I even pass over online vendors that only ship UPS, for ones that offer Fed Ex. UPS can't even deliver the stuff to the right address about 10% of the time. If the GPS says they are close enough, they look for a door and toss the box out as they drive by.

Fedex, ups, dhl will all break a targa top. It's a never ending battle.

I've had the same issues with FEDEX that you describe. I still just use who ever can get it there the fastest for the least amount of money. They will all break something, or deliver it to the wrong place at some point or another. I actually use USPS whenever possible.

Ive had problems with ALL of them. For UPS I always let them box up the items for me at the UPS store last time I shipped a Targa and an Exhaust system. Hence its on them if it breaks, your removed from the process and that cost to have the item shipped is passed onto the buyer up front for their protection. Only for large items such as this if I doubt my ability to pack an item safely. If I can package it myseff it always goes out USPS insured if the item is worth more than $50!!!

As to UPS paying you it depends on the argument of your actual packing job and did you take photos along the way. I would ask MRMOJO a member here as he is or used to be a moderator for one of the big shipping companies and may have a few suggestions.

I've shipped a few tops with "no problem". I use a Melrose box and have it returned to me after each ship. That's part of the conditions of sale! I've never charged a "core charge" for the box but I've considered it.

I package myself because I've seen what the "packaging stores" charge and what they accomplish. It's not what you had in mind when you contracted with them for the "packaging" and ship.

If the packaging service you used was also the UPS agent and you paid with a credit card dispute the charge. It's not anywhere near the price you lost but you'll convince someone that you're serious.
I believe UPS would likely need to return the package to you or the agent with the packaging materials and then the claim could be settled locally. If the agent/packager is a UPS agent they'll want their money so it should move them to help you get your claim settled "positively" in your favor. If you paid the packager and UPS denies it because of the packaging you've then got the packager to look towards for payment!!!

I always use UPS and if you let them pack it you will get a better guarantee it will arrive in good shape.
Here is a little story about UPS that happened to me today.
I shipped a brand new Opti Spark Distributor back to the manufacturer to be checked out [ electrical Grimlins in Ign on Hot Rod Vette ] so I downloaded return slip and sent it away.
Found problem after installing a spare .
Anyway I decided to contact tech and let them know when I discovered that the company had been sold and the facility had been closed two weeks before I shipped.
Holy cow a wino walking to a pawnshop with my $400.00 Opti.
Anyway I contacted UPS and they told me the local delivery driver brought the Opti back looked up where they moved to and rerouted my Dist. to the new address Gratis.
From Nevada to Columbus Ohio. Thanks UPS you Rock !

I bought a back bumper and a quarter panel and shipped them UPS freight and went to the freight dock to pick them up.
From the time I walked in till I drove off was 15 minutes and both items [ packed by them ] were in fine shape.
I use UPS whenever I can.
I also buy insurance and let then pack Items.

I had the same problem with a top that I bought earlier this year. It was photographed prior to packaging to prove it's original condition, double boxed and wrapped in bubble-wrap and the outer box was strapped as well. It was shipped UPS insured and arrived damaged. Fortunately, I happened to have my digital camera when I opened the box at the UPS Depot and I photograped the damage. Even got the UPS people to sign my shipping papers indicating that it was received damaged. Anyways, to make a long story short, despite all of this UPS initially declined my claim (thru the shipper). I yelled blue bloody murder (in a nice but firm manner) - it WAS insured afterall & packaged properly -and I worked with the shipper to get the claim elevated to a higher level. This time they approved the claim and I got my cheque (which I spent at the bodyshop to fix it). It all worked out in the end, but it was a huge hassle! I ended up speaking to a Regional Rep for UPS and he told me that they routinely deny ALL freight claims (this is apparently industry standard for everyone) because if you go away, they don't have to pay. If you squack and have proof (as I did) they'll cover you. THat's my experience and that's what I was told.

I fought with UPS for over a year. My package was professionally boxed. The packing company blamed UPS and UPS blamed the packing company. I my experience the insurance is useless. I never received any money.

Default Ups

95% of packages I've received from UPS were damaged in some manner. FedEx around here is great, never any damage. Even the US postal service is better. Go to the UPS complaint web site andd read the horror stories there. Mostly UPS says "inadequate packaging" and denies the claim. Insurance is useless.

I worked at a UPS sorting facility for 3 days, your packages are used to prop up trucks when they need an oil change! It is not a pretty site. Especially over sized items get tossed on the to big to be conveyored line where they are manhandled by wild apes.

I worked at UPS for 5 years. Preloaded, sorted, air....etc. We took pride in our work and handled packages correctly. Little Rock - South HUB in Arkansas. Great company to work for. Just ask MR. Mojo.

All of this was obseved in a "three day stay"?

No shipper is "damage free" and ALL of them actually do a pretty good job! We all tend to remember our own "worst" experience and relate only that! It's our nature!

I'm serviced daily by UPS, FEDEX, DHL, USPS and two or three "common carriers"! For the most part the experiences and service are "good to great"!

Not sure if it is it would probably be pretty pricey but it would certainly still be a usable core! Is this a solid top I think thats repairable but not the glass tops
