Can you say emissions? I knew you could. Well, that isn't the entire story:
Back in the late 60's and early 70's, manufacturers were rating gross HP, at the crank, with nothing else hooked up. Then along came cat converters and the energy crunch. The mid to late 70's wern't kind to the Vette. Then came the C4. It's HP rating wasn't stellar, but the torque was great! It could twist the tires, but lost it's breath over 4500 RPM. 205 HP, 300 FTlbs was impressive! Welcome the LT-1. It could pull hard up to 5700 and had decent torque. It carried the C4 for 4 years until the LT-4 (not withstanding the LT-5 ZR-1!!). Now, technology has driven us once again well into the 400 HP range and even higher!

Ummm... did this answer your question?

Emissions got us starting in 74 with the lower hp engine, then 75 with the crappy engine and cats (i think the 75 had about 175 hp). We didnt recover from it with the C3.

When the C4 came out in 84, it was like the greatest thing ever, Crossfire Injection was revolutionary, then they found a better way with the L98, perfected it to 250hp, then made a real jump to the LT1. It just took them awhile to perfect EFI and get around emissions tests.

may be a little low on HP but you gotta love the torque or the early C4's. The late C3's were the ones that had it the worse though. I helped a buddy out with his 79 L48 auto. talk about a turd for power.....but I loved the way it drove and how the front fenders were visible from the seats.

Each Vette compared to the other cars produced the same years were really awesome. :yesnod: Unleaded gas threw lots of manufactures a big curve when they had to lower compression ratios.
Some early engines were rated hp wise without water pumps, alternators or any other drag on the engine. Plus they had their own formulas for calculating too. I would love to see what all these would do on current dynos. :smash:
