Here's the update, sorry took so long....I was in Cali (Corvette Capital) the past 3 days.
Hooked up the gauge to see no pressure, just as I'd thought. Pulled out the fuel pump and started from square one. What i did different was I added some fuel line between the pump and the pulsator, those two just weren't connecting so i figured that had to be where it wasn't getting thru. Put it all back together and sure enough it fired up and runs great.
Best part is, NO MORE FLUTTER in the idle. Let it run for 20 minutes and took it for a 10 minute drive and it idles perfect at the stop lights now. YIPPEE!
Thanks for all the help and support, you guys rock. If you're ever in town the beers are on me!
I used fuel line hosing, should i switch to Fuel Injection? It was 50psi bought at checkers on the same rack they keep the fuel injection lines! Did notice that the line i put in was 5/16 though, compared with 3/8 that is coming off the gas tank. Will that make a difference? Your thoughts please, i do appreciate it!
it doesn't stay started long enough for me to get a pressure reading....lasts about 2 seconds if i dont press the gas, if i do it's less. I'll try the filter, hopefully that's it and it is cheap enough to replace.
It doesn't have to start to get a fuel pressure reading. It works like this;
When you turn the key on, the fuel pump is energized for approx 2 seconds to pressurize the fuel rail. The pump then shuts off unless the car is being cranked or the engine is running, but the fuel rail should remain pressurized for several minutes....even with only the 2 second pressurization cycle. The shut off is a built in safety feature, where in the case of a serious accident when the engine stops, so does the flow of fuel.
If it's losing pressure immediately after the pump quits running, we need to find out why.
You can run a wire from the positive terminal on the battery to terminal G on the ALDL (diagnostic link under dash). This will cause the pump to run continually even with the key off. GM built this in as a diagnostic feature.
But reading between the lines, I'm hearing no fuel pressure, right? Let's change the filter to rule it out....and then we go hunting again.
Frizlefrak,
I applaud your helpfulness, patience, and endurance helping Corvette505.
Good luck 505...
Thanks. A lot of folks on this board have done the same for me over the years, and have saved me a lot of time, money, and aggravation. Passing it on is the least I can do. If we were in the same town I'd go over and get my hands dirty.
I replace the fuel pump on my 86 three years ago. If you used the wiring diagram that came with the Autozone pump, it is wired backwards. I wired mine according to the instructions. The car wouldn't run. I had to reverse the wires from the instructions.
Give it a try.
Me too; same issue. The pump connectors are marked positive & negative. Make sure that you have the wires connected right. I had to replace the wire connectors to get them to fit. Once complete, worked like a charm.
i thought it was my fuel pump, but it turns out that it was a bad connection at the top of the sending unit on the inside. that connection corrodes over time.

Ok, update. New Fuel Pump.....New Fuel Filter. Idles great.....however, i can give it gas in park and neutral and it revs up fine, however, soon as i throw it in drive and give it gas it almost dies on me! What is up with that? Any ideas?
