I've had my C4 for10 years, I bought it used and didn't know it was stolen before I bought it. The vin number is missing from the dashboard area, is there anyway the vin can be replaced, the vin number is on the inside of the driver side door on a lable, but missing from the dash?
Hi Larry,
Your profile didn't say where you live. I would contact your state dept. of motor vehicles and see what the procedures are for clearing the title on your car. If it's still listed as stolen you're going to have to clear things up with the rightful owner or their insurance company. Hopefully you don't live in California. Our Dept. of Motor Vehicles is a real clown show! Maybe others here will have some ideas for you as well. Good luck with clearing up this mess.
For starters I'd just run a "CARFAX" on it and see if there's reason to be concerned! If the VIN and DMV history trail ends with you then you should be OK to ask the questions of the DMV's.
Have you moved it from "state to state" EVER?
I wouldn't just pick up the phone or visit a DMV and ask if this VIN is OK! I'm assuming you've a title etc in your state? I don't know what year your posting regarding but if it's a vehicle with a CCM you could get the VIN and Odometer information from it with a scan. You might check for a build sheet on the fuel tank and see if it's a match to your door information. SPO label on the console door matches? There's VIN information on several areas of the car but I wouldn't start the search unless you really need to.
I had an IROC that had a similar issue. The VIN tag was missing from the dash and riveted in the door. It was also marked as a police vehicle. CARFAX on it came back as police, but nothing else. I didn't really worry about it. Unless your car is in perfect condition with low miles, I don't think it would make much difference in the value since its too new to be a collector and too old to have much value as an everyday car.
Thanks for the info. I have the title to the vette. My home state is Tn. I wanted the info just in case I wanted to trade the veh in the future.
The "Southeast" for many years were "no title" states and many/many/many cars were routed through some of the states to "launder them"!! I don't know when for fact that changed but it was likely before the "creation" of your C4. I would have guessed late '70 early '80's.
In some states if a vehicle is rebuilt/reconstructed it can be assigned a VIN by a DMV after inspection and certification by a State Inspector of generally the State Police. In these situations the VIN would be attached by the Inspecting Agencies!
The rivets that attach VIN plate were quite valuable! Are they still? Haven't asked recently! Maybe someone will let us know!1
