I need assistance with my ac/heat. It had stopped blowing hot air. Then the ac stopped. Then it started blowing nothing but hot air and i mean hot. The compressor kicks in and out and the freon is properly charged. Im not sure why its stuck blowing only realy hot air. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My father in law thinks the electronic climate control has gone bad. Thanks in advance
Temperature (for all auto HVAC's) is controlled by a door that sits between the Evaporator and Heater Cores. For your Vette, you view what the door is doing by removing a resistor pod or blower module (depends on whether it's manual or electronic controls) from the left side of the Evaporator Case and looking inside the case. Then have someone operate the controls and see what the door does (it should move). Whatever it does or doesn't do, post what you see, the Year and whether it has Electronic or Manual Controls. Also tell us whether or not your getting air out of the correct vents; ie, on the windshield with Defrost, out of the floor when it's on Heat, etc.
Do us a favor and fill out your "view public profile" so we can see what your driving. Sound like it may be a faulty check valve. Its located on the right side of engine, under the fuel injector covers. Its a cheap part that is sold at all parts stores and is easy to install.
What year ??
Follow SunCr's advice and check the operation of the blend door.
Here is some info from my 86 manual, good for 86-89 Electronic and manual. http://members.shaw.ca/dankai/HVAV'S.pdf
Thanks for the replies. The car is a 96 collectors edition and the controls are all electronic. Sorry i forgot to mention that innitially.
After i got the car it seemed as if the blower fan would change speed for no reason. This was occuring with out it being on auto climate control. Also, it seemed to sometimes switch between blowing out the correct ac vents and blowing out of the defrost vent.
Sounds like the Programmer is shot - that's the Processor for your Electronic Controls. It receives inputs via a serial data circuit from the Dash and then controls vent position using vacuum, sends the compressor request signal to the PCM, controls the motor that moves the temp door and sends the low voltage blower signals to the blower module that operates the blower motor. It's linked to the Body Control Module so a bi-directional scanner can be used for diagnostics. If you only had a vent issue, I'd suggest you look at the vacuum harness connection which is problematic for your Year. However, your Vette seems to have multiple control issues, so it sounds more probable that the Programmer is toast. They're not cheap, so you might want a fork over a half/hour's worth of diagnostic at a shop that has a bi-directional hookup with the right cartridge.
You want a/c delco #15-73768 which www.acdelco shows for $476.42 with a line through it. That's down from the $600 or so I've seen around here. It's unique to the '96 so I guess that somehow justifies the price, but you might want to see if NAPA has it - they were suppose to come up with a Reman the last time I was at their site. And, you still might want to make sure it needs it by hooking up a bi-directional scanner.
