I am considering replacing the stock radio/cassette and speakers in my C4. If you have made the change, what did you select? What would you recommend? Thanks!
There are tons of options, depending on the year of your car. The early C4's can only accept a 1.5-DIN system, so most end up getting a single-din and an adapter place. The later cars have full double-dins, which you can either use a single-din with a storage pocket, or a full double-din system.
I personally splurged, and got a Pioneer 2-din nav system with Boston Acoustics 6.5" front components, with custom MDF enclosures I made, and the same brand 5.25" rear coax speakers. Ended up around $1600, but I love it now. And I can plug in my ipod
I have an 85 so i got a single din HU
I used the stock wiring and put 6x9s in the hatch and 5.25 in the doors
then some 10in subs in the storage compartments
I just put in a complete kenwood system, couldn't find all alpine so went with a system where the speakers, deck, etc matches.....sounds so much better than the stock, i'm loving it!
Alpine HU with Sirius Satellite radio and Infinity speakers all around. I was going to place an outboard amp but three things stopped me:
1) Money. I'm on a budget and my setup was around 500 bucks, about all I could budget to the sound system (since I had to buy new wheels and tires at the same time).
2) Space. Not too many places to mount outboard amps in a C4. I was going to place it behind the passenger seat. It wouldn't be obvious and would get some sort of air circulation.
3) It's loud enough stock. Since I'm not driving huge subwoofers but just 4 speakers, the system has enough power to drive the speakers and drown out the creaks and rattles.
My 89 came with a Kenwood head unit that controls a hidden Sirius satellite receiver. There were a few months left on the former owner's Sirius subscription. After a month of hearing good music with no commercials, I knew that I couldn't live without satellite radio, so in addition to the one in my Vette, an identical system went into my DD truck. The price of that installation was a subscription and radio for my wife's DD. Then I got an 85 Z28 Camaro and it needed the same system. So now we're up to four subscriptions.
What I'm saying is to be careful about installing a satellite radio system. It's VERY addicting and you may find that you need one in all your cars.

I have Sirius Sat receivers in my 2006 Mustang (Alpine HU), 1995 Vette (Alpine HU), 2003 Subaru Baja (Kenwood receiver with modulator to connect with Subaru stock radio) and a Sportster receiver hooked up to the Bose Wave Radio in our house.
4 scripts. The wife-unit and I love the Big 80's and Classic Rock stations along with the Classical station. No commericals. Fantastic signal quality and no losing the station after travelling 50 miles. I drove my Vette from Fort Collins, Colorado to Roswell, New Mexico last summer and never once changed the channel during the entire trip.
Roswell, were you going to the UFO festival? Who purposely comes to New Mexico? LOL
Me I love the mountains and Corvette friendly highways. Grew up in Carlsbad but we had a cabin in Ruidoso .
I go out there any time I get a chance.
Standing on top of a two thousand ft. cliff looking a hundred miles away ! Awesome !
Yeah Ruidoso rocks, i'll give you that. Taos canyon is cool too. Me, I like to head up on the highway thru the mountains outside of Durango, love to go out there for a weekend away!

Bah...give me Cloudcroft any day. Spend a few days there and you'll throw rocks at Ruidoso. Of course, you can still run over to the Inn of the Mountain Gods if you feel like playing the slots...or to the Downs if you wanna bet on the hay burners. The drive from Cloudcroft to Ruidoso is quite fun in a Corvette....just watch out for B.I.A. cops. They don't take well to paleface speeding through their sacred lands.
Durango is gorgeous....I'd love to live up there, but Colorado just gets too cold for this old Texan's bones.
I grew up in Roswell. The whole damn town is from outer space. Every so often we go back to visit the wife's family....and I kiss the ground in El Paso when I get back.
Anyhow...back on topic...it really all depends on what you listen to and how loud you like it. I went with a simple Pioneer CD head unit, Pioneer 6x9's in the rear, and Pioneer 6.5 in the doors. Total cost of about $215, and it's been playing for 7 years now and still sounds great...big improvement over the Bose. I added XM about 4 years ago. I bought multiple car kits and installed them in all of my vehicles...and just move the receiver from car to car.

1.5 DIN Alpine CDA head unit and the rest I can't remember. Phantom face.
Granted that if you have an A4 the face will not slide into the unit while the car is in park because the gear shifter is in the way. You can shorten the shifter or live with it.
