Is there a register that keeps records of what my original engine number is? The import papers for my car into Australia only show the VIN. I didn't record my engine number and sent the block in for machining and now have no idea of what the engine number is.

I think the engine number will be the last 5 or 6 numbers of your VIN followed by a suffix code based on the car's trans and whether it had an oil cooler. Also, cars for export all had the same suffix, ZJC.

The engine block is stamped something like
V1011 ZXX
being the factory and date code followed by engine code listed below
The last 7 digits of the VIN are stamped below that: such as 5103739
1985 engine codes are
ZDF: 350ci auto
ZJJ: 350ci auto, OC
ZJB: 350ci manual
ZJK: 350ci manual, OC
OC =oil cooler
As yours is not a "export " car , it will not have the ZJC code

Just out of curiosity what is considered an "expot" car. Last time I checked there is no New South Wales in the USA.
