I'm looking at this little Garmin Nuvi 205 as a starter. It's a small screen but will probably do just fine for now. Seems to have a lot of bells and whistles for the money. Around $128.00
Viewed the video and it seems to have very adquate features.....and the price is in line as well. You can go nuts deciding with all the products and price ranges out there. Have used both Garmin and Tom Tom, you can't go wrong with your choice...
FWIW, I got a Garmin 255 at Christmas & have been very happy with it so far. In Canada, the major difference between the 205 & 255 is the 205 only includes maps for border (northern) states whereas the 255 has all 50 states (both have all Canadian provinces).

Look into your voice settings. You can set it to english Jack and Jill or you can set to just plain english. You won't get spoken directions with street names. You will get a very normal voice that directs you when to turn without street names.
I drive a truck cross country.
I have both a Tom Tom and a Garman.
They are both good.
The Garmin has better graphics and more bells and whistles.
The Tom Toms maps are more true to the real angle of the roads.
I can use the Tom Tom when it is foggy and cant see how sharp the corners are.
The Garmin road angles are not as accurate. I would never use the Garmin maps as an indicator of how sharp a curve really is.
They both screw up and take the long/wrong way at different times.
They are both great to have as a tool.
But you still got to use your head and common sense.
You cant go wrong with either.
If I had to choose one, I would keep the Tom Tom.
I keep the Tom Tom on the screen that shows normal maping.
The Tom Tom looks like a birds eye view maybe 100 feet above the truck.
At the same time I have the Garmin on a topigraphical map; back way out, so I can see larger areas of where I am going. That was I can see my position between cities.
So I keep the Garmin at a birds eye view of about 30,000 feet above the road.
So I find a very good use for the both of them at the same time.
But they are both very close.
The Tom Tom graphics look like they came out of 1980.
The Garmin graphics look like a modern video game.
But I find the Tom Tom graphics to be LESS confusing.
I can understand the places I need to turn at a glance with the Tom Tom.
I have to spend more time thinking about what the Garmin is trying to tell me to do.
Driving a truck cross country, I really like having both of them at the same time.
wife bought me a Garmin Nuvi 750 for my last birthday..I love that machine..I can put in multiple addresses and go from one to the other without redoing anything. It also can talk through my radio, using wireless bluetooth I guess. All in all it is one great machine, nice clear large screen, changes color as the outside light dims or gets brighter. Uses a suction cup thingie on the windshield and holds on tight. Nothing to mount.
I have a Tom-Tom xl 330 not a very expensive unit but works well enough.Good choice of voices. It gets confused sometimes but usually when I don't program in where I want to go correctly.

Yeah dont take the GPS as the final word, use common sense. Anybody to have the sense to drive a C4 is smart enough not to turn onto a railroad track or a one way. Like everyone says, make sure its updated as road conditions change and sometimes thaer is wrong info in em from the git go. My Garmin doesnt even know where my house is and has directed me down a one way street the wrong way. It was a refurb unit tho and didnt have updated maps. I also keep the volume muted 'cause it sounds like a female Wil Shatner unless I am in the city where I cant watch it. Hide it when you get out, but kep it up where you dont really take your eyes off the road. I keep mine tucked in the left corner of the windshield, right off the dash. Its definately a target for thieves so take it in with you.
Any brand is good as long as its updated. Good luck with it, dont drive off into a lake!
