Default Gps....

I'm still among the GPSless . I want to get one though and was wondering what some of you guys have. Not the built-in to the radio deck type but the portable type.

Which brand seems to work the best.

I have a Garmin, my son had a Tom Tom until someone stole it.
Different interface, but either one is good. On a trip to SC from Ohio, we both had ours, and they both goofed up at different points in the trip.
The Garmin did seem to find better routes, in general.
I'd say you can't go wrong.

I have a Garmin (Nuvi 260) and it works perfect.

They have several different models, so you need to research which one would fit your needs best.

I think it depends on when you buy it and what maps are in it. Mine went crazy on a new road, (I think it was US 40). It thought I was in a field.
You can do map updates, but I think they're like $70.

I have two Magellan's. One in the wife's car (larger Maestro 4220) and a smaller one that I use for my Volunteer job with the Sheriff's Office (RoadMate 1200). Both easy to use with software they call Hertz Never Lost. Easy to use for the first time user.

Both are good but maps that are 2 to 3 years old. Like Relic said, updates are available for about $70. Only been led astray once in Virginia but if eventually got back on track.

I have a Garmin 880. Nice unit, alot of bells & whistles but most importantly it works pretty well. There have been times where I couldn't find something but that could happen with a printed map as well. I have no other experience with another brand gps so I can't give a comparison.

Great reviews guy! Thanks

I'm looking at this little Garmin Nuvi 205 as a starter. It's a small screen but will probably do just fine for now. Seems to have a lot of bells and whistles for the money. Around $128.00

After riding with two different buds who both had Garmin's with a female voice & getting sidetracked both times ( one time we ended up in the airport parking garage) I purchased a cheap Tom Tom from Wally World. It has a male voice giving directions & he has not given me the wrong info to date.

I have a Garmin nuvi 200. Works very well. I like it best with the sound turned off because the voice is very insistent. Just read the directions. They are large enough to see easily

I don't have one yet, but have been looking also. I was told though by many that do and those that sell them to get the largest screen as possible because it will be easier to read, and the street names are spelled in full and not abreviated. Since I am getting to be an old duffer, I think it would be easier with my eyes also. JMO
Thanks for the thread, I have been hoping for some user advice before I buy also.

That one will work out great for you. The one I have has most of the same features, but that 205 is a little newer and has a few newer features that mine does not.

You won't be disappointed.

I have GPS, and love it, and made mount with cup holder so it's not seen.

I've got the Garmin Nuvi 260. Works great, plays MP3 and Audible books. The suction cup holds it right under the rear view mirror. I love it.

Don't use the suction cup, use the friction mount. Thieves are breaking into cars that have the ring left on the windshield from the suction cup. Friction mount works really well. Mine stays in place even when driving my truck on the beach and hitting some nice ruts.

I bought an Eclipse AVN2210P head unit last year that has a removable TomTom GPS in it - that feature in particular interested me, since I park my Vette for half the year, and wanted to be able to use it in other vehicles. I haven't installed it yet (on my spring to-do list), but we did use the GPS on our trip to Pennsylvania last summer, and it worked great.

I'm a Garmin fan, have a Nuvi 760 and really like it, I've updated the maps once, for around $70, and the software several times, it's free, just hook up to your computer and check the Garmin web site. Garmin customer service is the best, spent over an hour with me diagnose and fix a problem I had once, my own fault, and they couldn't have been nicer. What ever one you get, once you try it you won't leave home without it!

That's pretty ingenuous of you! I'll keep this mount in mind.
