I have to get a code reader to see if I'm geting a # 32 as I think (very dangerous for me when I try that thinking thing) the Egr valve is the culprit on my 86.
The Service engine light comes on after 1/2 to an hours worth of continuous driving. Whe I shut down for 10 minutes or so the light does a vanishing act for another hour before coming on again.
Oil is full, motor purrs and am getting a solid average of 24 mpg. Any idea's ?? classcorvette1@yahoo.com or goodnbadd2@yahoo gets to me fastest. Really appreciate any input.
Since the ECM throws the code after driving for a while it is NOT sensing the EGR flow after it is called for, which means 1) the EGR temp sensor in the EGR pipe is not functioning or 2) the EGR valve is not opening.

There is a diagnostic routine on my site.
Is this the same for all C4s? or does it differ with engines? I have had H32 go off a few times after driving long distances but goes off after a while, the OP stated he had an early c4 but ive got a 95, so just checking if it differs with engines.
Sorry in advance I'm not trying to highjack this post but I need the egr switch and cannot find one anywhere. Mid America lists one in their new catalog but it is not available. My local GM dealer says it is not available, any ideas where I can get one?
My 86 also does that. checked the valve with vacuum, it isn't opening all the way.
Talked to a couple of mechanics about it. Said it won't hurt anything, which makes sense as some people remove it anyway.

Either the valve or the switch. Definately change both when you do it. Learned that the hard way.
Read my post from a few years ago that solved the switch problem for me. No code since
The switch for an 86 is $14.99 at Advance.
Thank You VERY Much for all the information ! It's been 10 (or more) years since I had this problem come up. I was "pretty sure" of the problem & fix but not positive. Must be the age thing. I had a little clip type tool I got through Mid America in the early 90's which I must have given to "New" owners when I sold an 85 I restored. Have not seen a clip like that since but then again I haven't had need to look either,
Anyway, THANK YOU AGAIN !! Douglas C / Class Corvette
