My 87 automatic has had a really good run without issues. Last August was the last time she recieved more than maintenance - and I drive her everyday......all winter....in Ohio.
However, all good things come to an end.
She now stalls perodically for no apperant reason. She'll start running "funny" then stall. Now to her credit she starts right back up and runs fine maybe for several days. I first assumed bad gas but I have refilled several tanks full.
Sometimes were stopped at a light and she'll drop from a perfect idle. Other times in resedential traffic, once on the freeway at speed. Again each time she restarted and fine and it was perhaps days or a week before it happened again.
A starting point would be helpful. Mechanics isn't my strongest virtue.
A good idea is to check for trouble codes first, this might help you narrow down your problem area.
1 shot in the dark:
Wait until dark then pop the hood and start the car. Watch for arching on or around the plug wires.
Another guess that might be related to your stall condition would be to inspect your O2 sensor wiring to ensure that it is not grounding against the heat shields or exaust.
Another guess, it might be an Ignition Module, this is located in the distributor. When these go the motor will shut off like you turned off the key . When mine went bad it didn't matter if it was at a light or going down the highway, when it shut off it shut off.. They usually start doing it once in awhile, then it will gradually start doing it more often. Mine would also start right back up like there was no problem at all...WW
