(hope this helps) i'm not 100% sure of this (maybe 99%), but it's what i've heard. hash marks are an original grand sport thing. they were added as some sort of identification on the 60's era grand sports. as the story goes, the stripes were added to one of the gs so drivers, mechanics, crew chief, or ???, could identify a particular car out on the track. they were added during the testing phase, before any numbers were added to the car. this is the reason they only show up only on the left side or pit side of the car. like i said, it's what i've always heard. if any GS buffs out there know a different story, please post. - :flag
The idea was that when racing at LeMans when the Cars would go past the pits at well over 100mph and in the dark they would be easier to identify if they had the hash marks on them. To make each car different one car had just one another had two and the last one had three.
