Default Half Years?

My corvettes VIN says that its an 86, but it has 85 characteristics like no abs, and no third brake light. Are there half years?

VERY interesting. It might be worth your while to talk with Gordon Killebrew about this. He would know for sure but charges for a phone consult.

You might have something rare there.

The door sticker isn't there anymore. How do I know if it was early production?

Can you pull the build sheet off the top of your gas tank?

So is it an 85 or an 86?

Signature

Red 85, Open Air Lid, K&N Filter, Accel Super Coil.
The only 85 in Amherst owned by a 17 year old.

That's the first thought that came to my mind as well.

3rd brake lights are federally required on all passenger cars sold in North America since 1986.

Are you saying the 10th digit of your VIN is a "G"?

If so what are the last 6 digits?

Build date and options (or lack thereof) are not indicatiors of model year -- the tenth digit of the VIN is. If it's an "F" you've got an '85, if it's a "G" you've got an '86. Period. The last 6 digits of the VIN will imply the build sequence (last '85 VIN is 139729; last '86 coupe VIN is 127794 -- the closer to the end your VIN is, the closer to the end of production). GM sometimes will include small next-year improvements in a late production car, but will never "forget" new model year additions on any car. CHMSL is mandatory for all '86 production cars (based on VIN) so if you've got an '86 (again based on the VIN) but there is no CHMSL then you've got to figure out what happened to it. You can be sure that no '86 Corvette left BG without one.

Uh, no, it isn't.

Is the 10th digit of your VIN a "G"? If it is it's a 1986 VIN. If it an "F" then it's a 1985 model year.

The last 6 digits of the VIN will tell you approximately where in the build year it was made.

As Vette 73 said some late build models may have features from the next build year. For example late model 2003 builds cars have the C6 fuel system design.

Not to mention that the car is 24 years old and may have had parts interchanged from later models.
