Default Auto Shift Cable

1996 LT1

The shifter is really hard to move from gear to gear. I'm assuming it's the cable. How difficult is it to change it out?

I have also read that there is a switch in the console to prevent the car from starting without pushing the brake pedal that will go bad. Could it be this and not the cable?

Thanks, Mike

The solenoid in the console keeps you from pushing down the button on top of the shifter unless the brake pedal is applied to get it out of park. An option on 94-96 A4s only. If that is the poblem then just pull the cover and pop the solenoid off.

Thanks Andy

I'm looking through FSM and the SIR is making me a little concerned about tackling this cable thing. Have you had any dealings with it? Any tips?

That's not the problem.

If I go below D with shifter it's really stuborn about going back in drive. Down right hard at times.

The solenoid shouldn't affect gear to gear. The cable isn't bad but the smart thing is to use the old cable as a snake before you pull it. The grommett is up under the front of the console and a little tricky to get at from the top.

Makes sense but looking at the cable it appears the lug on the top end isn't going through that groumet. Will it?

I took a look at the cable under the car and it seems fine. It moves very well without being connected to the trans. I can easily move the shift lever on the trans by hand.

Is there anything in the console that can be either worn out or binding to prevent a smooth shift with the shifter? When I got the car it was a little stiff but has gotten worse here lately.

Just thought I'd ask before tearing the console apart. Thanks

Hi Mike!

Man, that sounds like the same problem we had with my wife's grand cherokee. We were backing out of the driveway one day, and when I went to shift from R to D, the dang thing just hung up. It would move, but you really had to apply mucho force to get it to move. I got it back up the drive way, and then when I got it in to park I it took me forever to get the keys out of the ignition...

It wound up being something under the console, and nothing to do with the transmission. We had to have it towed to the dealership, and they 'fixed' it. It was a lease, with one week left on the contract...

Good luck!

Thanks for replying David

I actually had a difficult time removing the key from the switch yesterday.

I'm going to tear into the console this afternoon and take a look.

You Bet Mike!
Good Luck!! That sounds exactly like the problem we had...
I'll look for the paperwork tonight and see what the problem was, as I just can't remember...

I'm still waiting on the ICM...Ecklers send the wrong part.
I do have the new MSD coil though--So hopefully, once the ICM gets here she'll fire up again! We'll see!

It appears to be the cable. There isn't a lot in there it could be besides that. Getting it out is going to be fun! Everything is loose and it is still hard to move. I found $.46 though. And a lot of screws the PO left out when he sent the Bose off to get it refurbished.

you don't have any exhaust pieces getting hung up on the shifter underneath the car do you?

No, but something similar is what seemed to make it harder to move than it was. I left the O2 harness loose and it got caught in the cable and ripped the boot. It hasn't been right since.
