So, I find that my head gasket is leaking and it took out the starter. The auto parts joint wants almost $250 for a starter....... What gives ??? It's a '91. Does that make a difference ? I've got two TPI IROCs and the starter is only $70 on those... Help me out here. -Mike
STOP! buy a rebuild kit for like 30 dollars and do it yourself! i did about 6 months ago and havent had a problem yet. My starter got to the point where it just went CLICK! then after the rebuild NO PROBLEMS!
Heres some pics! And if your interested i think i have an extra rebuild kit for your year.
See the groves grounded into the contacts by the plunger!
Is that the only thing that can knock out the starter?
You know, now that i just went back and looked at the first post, i forgot that your starter went out like that, and im not sure if what i posted even matters now. Dumb me! have you taken the starter out yet. does any one know if the starter can be shorted out like that, or do you know for sure that its your starter thats the problem.
I haven't taken my starter out yet. When I bought the car I would turn the key and sometimes it would take a second or two before anything happened. The battery kept going dead as well. When parked it would sometimes last 3 weeks and other times 5 days, Then it needed a jump. Now it quit all at once. I got it in the air and it's covered with oil from a bad head gasket.........

i do most of the work on my car,but by no means am i a certified mechanic. that being said my GUESS, would be that your starter just died and your gasket leak had nothing to do with it. when i took my starter out it really doesnt seem as though you would be able to short it out with a leak like that. again my GUESS. try to tackle one issue at a time.
Had to put in a starter shortly after buying the car in 03. Got it from AutoZone for about $100-$125 as I best recall with a lifetime guarantee.
The last two starters in other cars that I repaired by replacing the solenoids, the darn starter craped out with in one year. I just had bad luck and started replacing the whole thing just to be done with it. But I am aware of the parts that can be replaced in the vette starter and might give it a shot again if the need arises.
For my "91" Vette, I bought a remanufactered Nippondenso mini starter (same as the original), from NAPA auto for $149.
When you go to install it, there will be two transmission lines just below the starter and it looks like they'll have to be removed but, the starter will come out without removing anything.
