Default Hydraulic Floor Jack.......

I have a problem with a given to me Hydraulic Floor Jack. It pumps up, but when you are supposed to twist the handle to let it down....nothing, it just sits there.

There is an allen plug next to the twisty gears...you can loosen that plug and let the fluid out and that will allow the thing to go down. There has to be a blow by valve that opens when you twist the handle and the gears that isn't working.

Has anyone tore into one of these things? any suggestions?

I know I know....I'm just one that looks into it before chunking it.

I already fixed the leak in it by dremmeling that allen smooth and using a crush ring.....now if I can get the relief valve to work

I was given a 10 ton semi jack, and it won't hold pressure after a few years, I still won't throw it out, and I have to small race jacks. never know when I might need it, plust it throws the vette around like paper.

May just be out/low on fluid throw some DOT 3 in the fill hole and try to pump it.

NO ! Don't do that!! DOT3 will swell the seals and might get it to go up and down again for a while, but will eventually eat them completely out. If it already fell once, next time it might be on your hand or head! Either take it to a repair shop or throw it out!

Always use jackstands while lifting a car...this reduces the squish factor.

This is why you NEVER get under a car on a jack (hydraulic or otherwise). Always use jack stands.

At one time I screwed around with busted jacks then I had one collapse while I was working on a tire. Falling car caught my shoe but not me.Made a believer out of me.If a jack doesn't work right out it goes.

Over the years several guys who I either knew personally or knew a close family member (father of a guy I work with etc) have been killed by falling vehicles. I always use either jack stands, or some oak blocking when I'm going to have any part of me under the car.

Whenever I lift my car, I put everything I can under it to support it as it goes up/down. I had an old time bumper jack slip on me years ago, when I was a kid. I wasn't under it, but I was amazed at how there was no sound, nothing, just fell over. You learn in a hurry.

Here is a floor jack at Sears for $40. It should be enough for you, at least for the vette.

If you have a Harbor Freight store nearby, just get one of their 3-ton aluminum jacks. They have a 17" lifting height and the pad is large enough for good support.

Most of the aluminum jacks at Sears, Shucks, AutoZone, NAPA and other auto parts stores are made by the same company and just have different labels. Costco also has similar jacks.

And never use anything but hydraulic jack oil to top off or refill the jack. You can get a small bottle of fluid at any auto parts store for just a couple bucks.
