Default New with Questions

Well, I'm new to this side of the board. Been over with the C3's & my '74 L82.

Over the weekend I picked up a '92 with Greenwood Pkg. & have a few things I need to go to work on. Any direction is most appreciated.

1) Temp gauge stays down @ 100* but the cooling fans come on shortly after startup. I'm thinking maybe bleed the cooling system. Suggestions, cure???

2) Passenger window doesn't work, sort of. Previous owner said motor was bad. I tried it, both with the drivers & passengers switch & it went down and back up, once. Didn't work after that. Where do I start?

3) Previous owner fitted mid 90's Trans-am/Firebird 16" wheels & tires. They look hideous to me. I'm not ready to sink a fortune into custom wheels & tires. Suggestion on original size wheels & tires and/or an economical direction???

4) Greenwood Pkg. ??? PO said was factory but the build sheet & window sticker make no mention. Who? What? Where? When?

I appreciate any & all insights...

Congradulations, and welcome to the C4 side of the forum!

1) Is this the analog gauge? If you hit "Gauges" on the information console, you can cycle through Coolant temp, Oil temp, and voltage, all digital readouts of the exact reading. I don't think the fans should be coming on that soon, but maybe the analog sending unit is broken; I think the ECU uses the same input as the digital. May be wrong here, but it's something to check.

2) You might try seeing whether the motor itself is getting power or not; that'll let you know if its the motor itself or something before the signal gets there. Hopefully someone will chime in with a solution that doesn't require you to take your door apart though...

3) I'm partial to GS-replicas, but they do look amazing on a black car. And, you can get them for about $500 for a set, which is pretty reasonable. C5 z06 wheels also look good and reproductions can be found for pretty cheap. There's actually a "what wheel looks the best?" thread going on right now, so you can check that out and see what you like. A lot of them are $$$ though...

Also, are you in Roanoke, VA? I'm in school in MD right now, but I'm from Roanoke, and will be coming back there for the summer before entering the real world

Stealth LT4 - Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, in Roanoke, VA for 31 years.

It is the analog gauge that appears to not be reading. It's been so long since my previous C4's that I don't remember these little nuances. Will check when I get home this evening.

Welcome to the C4 world!

1) Be sure your a/c isn't on. The fans will operate immediately if so.

2) Do you hear anything when you try the windows? If so you might be talking a regulator. Otherwise it's in your wiring. Most likely a bad ground but could be in the switch or connector.

The rest I can't speak much about.

Welcome over here and congratulation on your C4 I'll leave the help up to the guys that know a boat load more than I do. I guess you still have your 74, that is a really good looking car. The wheels you can pick up some original saw blades or the ZR1 style. They are pretty easy to find and aren't expensive. Good luck and post pictures when you can.

The PO is wrong. It's all aftermarket.

For the analog temp gauge - I've done a lot of work to get my cooling system working correctly in my 92. The analog gage is NOT linear, if you use the gages button it will show a more accurate temp reading on the dash. If the needle never moves the wire to the second sensor is probably broke. The second temp sensor is in the passenger side head between plugs 6 & 8. When I did my head gaskets last year I had to work on that wire some it was in bad shape.

Both fans come on at start - are you sure? The AIR pump sounds a lot like the cooling fan and cycles on at engine start. If it is both fans, make sure the AC is off. Other wise you'll need a scanner of some kind to view the start up. My fans were comming on, but setting a code. Actually was a bad fan on the driver side, fixed it code is gone and fans operate correctly.

Now I rarely see over 190 on the dash and the analoge gets about 3/4

Wheels - keep an eye on the for sale section. If you were closer I'd offer my set of sawblades that need refinishing.

IIRC the greenwood package was an add-on

Welcome to the madness!

Checked the digital temps last night. Fans came on at 191* & idling the temp. stayed constant @ 207*. Analog gauge never moved. Found what I think is the sensor and it has a plug with two wires coming out of it.

Any idea why passenger light, after it opens or closes would continue to "clack, clack, clack"???

Still got to work on the power window.

See the sticky at the top for pointers to replace the headlight bushings.

The kit is < $10 for each side from any of the Corvette supply houses.
If search is working and you have a dremel there is a post somewhere about using plastic bushings from Home Depot.

Just because your keyboard doesn't have that symbol doesn't mean you can't make one. But, if you were a smart *** like me you would know that.

BTW, you might want to see a doctor about that stick.

My fans come on at 225 to 227 - and cool it down pretty rapidly to 215. This only really happens after it's completely warmed up - and I get stuck in traffic or something.
