Its a 4 speed tranny with an overdrive unit on the back...not having one I'd guess the overdrive unit effectively adds 3 more gears by being able to click the OD button in 2-4 gears...
I'm glad someone brought this topic up....more often than not, when I hear people speak of the 4+3 tranny, it is often accompanied by negative comments.
Sort of like, "You really don't want THAT tranny. It's garbage" Why is that? Is it really that bad?
I didnt have any problems with mine for almost 2 years then the overdrive hit me and broke, cost me over 2,000.00 after it was all said and done.
But its the overdrive thats the problem the 4 speed is awsume I wouldnt shy away from a 4+3 car but I would tear apart the trany and beef it up because I know what to do to make it right, but thats if I could find the parts oh well ill stick with my ZR-1 :yesnod:

Its just kinda quirky, you have to get used to it.

Now you know what it feels like to be a Crossfire owner.
not a stupid question at all, it's a fairly rare tranny and lots of people have never experienced it! Now let me tell you, on my 85 the tranny MUST be in reverse to get the key out of the ignition, and EVERY time I get it serviced I tell them that and they still ask me "how do you get the key out of the ignition?"
A clarification too, I don't go from 4th back down to 2nd with OD. I suppose you could  but I either drive with it on in all gears (2,3 4) or off and switch it on in the high end of 4th. With it on in the low gears the shift points (speed) are a lot higher. I know Scorp will set me right if I'm wrong but like I said I never go from 4 to 2 OD. What's giving me doubt here is people referring to it like a 7 speed, to me it's just a 4 speed with two different modes if you will. I use OD off for town driving and OD on for highway.
btw it IS a quirky and needy transmission but I learned to drive stick on it  I like the 4 speed, it's not better or worse to drive, just different than the ruby's ZF6
