Default Rock damage

While driving along in my '88 Vette, a big rock came rolling out into my lane from somewhere. Didn't have time to swerve or stop. Cross-member hit it and then the rock tumbled rearward while banging into various parts of the undercarriage.

The rock is 4-7/8" tall. Obviously too tall for my Vette's ground clearance.

I have a $500 deductible. Any suggestions on whether or not this is worth an insurance claim?

Without knowing the full extent of the damage, it is not possible to say.
Crossmember alone makes the claim worthwhile, unless you are capable of doing the swap yourself.

Depends if it actually damaged anything on its way through. You might have holes in your floorpan, maybe not. It may have dented some of your rear suspension members, maybe not. Only way to tell is inspect them.

first of all, the cat is $100 with a $50 installation fee.
your frame looks bent, see if the muffler guy can heat it up and bend it back for an extra $20, then go to a frame and alignment place and get them to make it straight and aligned. That will probably be another $150-$200.
Then at the muffler shop, while it's on the rack, walk around under the car, and inspect as much as you can while the guy is working.
Then write everything down, and figure up what the total cost will be, and if it exceeds $700, it would be worth it if your insurance doesn't go up.

I have already crawled under the Vette and I've taken many pictures. I just didn't want to overload the post on the Vette forum with too many pictures. Not sure what the limit is.

This is the sequence of impacts under the car:
1) Crossmember (damaged the most)
2) Front end of oil pan has minor scrape marks
3) Main catalytic converter (glancing blow - mostly scrapes)
4) Corner of floor pan has a 1 inch chunk knocked off
5) Rear suspension trailing arm mount (doesn't look bent - just heavy scrape marks)
6) Driver's side tail pipe just ahead of muffler is 50% crushed.

I was going about 30 MPH at time of impact. Dont' know if front end was knocked out of alignment. Drivability seems perfectly normal. No leaks, no shimmies, no strange behavior.

Thanks for your feedback. Looks like I'll be contacting AAA to make a claim.

I had a similar incident, and Prudential tried to make it a collision claim. They said I colided with the rock, therefore collision.

That's one thing we have plenty of here in Pa. on our roads. Rocks, stones and chunks of concrete. Our roads are coming apart.
