A friend asked me today about differences between the LT1/4 and LS1 engines. I just figured that there were modifications to the head/cam/and intake. What were the actual changes made and why couldnt GM top the LT4's hp rating with the LS1?

The differences are huge. It is simplier to describe the simularities... the bore centers. Thats it. They share bore centers.
the block, heads, intakes, headers et.al. are all different. not even close. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING will interchange.
Why GM could not match the power is debatable... I suspect it was just a lack of development time... all new and everything. The main reason for re-engineering was due to long term concerns for emissions and fuel economy. To be honest, the LT1/4 (original SBC) was about out of its life cycle...
"....why couldnt GM top the LT4's hp rating with the LS1?"
They did - 345HP (in 97-00) vs 330HP. Maybe I misunderstand the question? PS, I have never driven an LT4 but i've heard nothing but great things about them:cheers:
"LT4 was underrated at 330, most believe it was closer to 360."
I think the same could be said for the LS1. I guess we'd have to look at dyno pulls from the same dyno on the same day to tell for sure... anyone privy to such info? GM has a history of sandbagging the HP claims. I know....I owned a 98 Z28 before my C5. 305HP.....right ;)
