Default quick advice

looking at an 85 4+3 for sale tonight...
seller says that it always ran strong but needs a tune up. idles OK but with throttle it dies out.
said it did have water in the gas tank at one point a while ago but has recipts for the repair.
car prob left garage 2-3 times in the last year.
Im thinking fuel filter? coudl it be injectors or vaccum leak?
wanna know what im looking at so i can check it while there/know how serius it may be and use it as a baraining chip....

only think in not too sure about is that its lt bronze... with bronze interior. not my first choice of color but if the price is right.... ( I could always repaint some time down the road.....)

It could be a nightmare. Depends on how much you want to spend.

Personally I wouldn't buy a car that didn't at least leave the drive way.

Default walked away

walked away. he only wanted 4900 for it. but the paint clearcoat was rough. the seals were bad. the carpet was stained and interior smelled...the dash was very dim....the tranny and engine were seeping. engine wasnt throwing a code but the engine would idle ok and then die after a few seconds. as it warmed up it got better but never took load. wires and cap looked new which concerned me that it wasnt igniin but the plugs looked corroded and the writing old style. maybe just plugs.... fuel filter looked newer... dont want to deal with injectors.... he had a set of borla muffles to go with it... i think i could get him to 4k or below but dk that i want the headache...

think i will keep my eyes open for a cleaner one.... may bring a fuel pressure gauge over for fun to see if that's it...

from what you've described it would be the worst 4k you can spend. You can throw another 10k into that car and have a nice $14,000 car that's worth maybe $5,000. Keep looking, you can find one in a lot better condition.
Look what this guy got for 5k

thanks for the words of encouragement. seemed too good to be true and it was... problem is agreements with the wife is that we wait another year unless its a deal too good to pass up.. a clean c4 for 4k would have been that deal... so anyone out there that wants to give me an offer i cant refuse, please do so! lol.

this one makes me appreciate the condition of the vette i sold and makes a part of me wish i had kept it despite its flaws...it had new weather strips descent paint. nice carpet and seats... only it needed rubber and an engine knock taken care of.. only minor stuff

What part of the country do you live in. There is a gold 85 on Ann Arbor, MI Craiglsist that sounds a lot like this one.
There is another on the Grand Rapids, MI Craigslist that I looked at that appears to be pretty good in the 7K range. It is 2-tone blue with a built engine and C5 thin spokes. Runs nice and sounds mean. Just needs interior (carpet now and seats later).

You made the right move. Too many nice cars out there for reasonable prices to buy one that's going to be a money pit.

im willing to travel some for the right car or far for the perfect car....
I'm outside lansing and the car i was looking at was on lansing craigslist... not to big on the bronze cars... i think my preferece is. silver, black, blue (not light) red maybe. not so much into the gold/bronze but for the right price i care more about the car than the color...
