I'm back after 37 years w/o a vette and now have an '89 C-4 It's been in storage for a while, but the injectors were changed when it came out. Runs good after a few miles but has a persistant cough and quits at idle every couple of stops. Other than the usual radio problems everything else works fine. What do you guys recommend as I start to bring this gal back to life? Oh yes, I ordered a FSM as you've suggested.
After any time in storage, fluids and filters. Radiator flushed and pressure checked. Basic tune-up, plugs, cap and rotor. Replace dry, cracked tires. Fix/replace stereo and then the fun really starts. Enjoy
Mike brings up an interesting point. I'm somewhat new to computer testing of automotive systems. Can you suggest a resonable tester to use or should I just go to my local mechanic and have him run it?
I recommend a paper clip.
There's write up here about putting a paper clip in the AB connectors of the OBDI port and watching the codes flash on the DIC. Do a search, if you can't find it, I'll see if I have it somewhere. I found a link:
I have a Auto Xray 6000 and like it. It was somewhere between $300.00 and $350.00 and you can set it up to read ( real time) and watch it as the car is being driven to check the function of most engine components. You can check things like EGR operation, O2 sensor, knock count, injectors, TPS funtion and setting and closed loop function. You can also record all the data and put it on your computer. Paying someone else everytime you want a scan can get real expensive at $30.00 to $50.00 a pop....WW
Thanks to all of you for your advise and council. I have followed the suggestion of one member and added "SeaFoam" to a tank of gas and drove it "...like I stole it...". She running much better (the Vette) and I'm scheduling the cooling system flush, oil change and transmission service in the next few weeks. Our local Chevy dealer has a "Corvette Certified" mechanic that's been working on them since 1984. I hope that means something.
If all works out well, I'll only be left with the Bose problem and a climate control lite that's argumentative.
