I lost some info i had saved.. Not trying to start a long drawn out post.
Need to know THE WIDEST TIRE I CAN USE IN THE REAR OF MY 96
USING STOCK 17X9 WHEEL (i believe thats stock size) .. I have to purchase a new tire ,figured id buy a pr. for the rear only , and want to put the absolute widest I can , car is not lowered in case it makes a differance..
Thanks ..
Stock is 17x9.5", and 285/40-17 is the widest that's designed to fit on that rim. You won't gain anything from using a wider tire than that, aside from a ballooned look and an emptied wallet. The actual contact patch will be no larger due to the altered geometry, and the sidewall might also overheat because of how much it is bent.

You could squeeze a 315 on a 9.5" rim, but as others have mentioned the sidewall will balloon and your contact patch probably won't be any wider anyway. I'll add though that Sumitomo 315s are verrrry narrow (compared to other brand 315s) and actually fit on a 9.5" rim quite well.

I've seen it done, they go on the rim, but it's not the best fit which is why I bought the wheels I did.
