If the starter is attempting to start, you can pretty much rule out VATS.
Maybe a bench test to see if the starter's pinion gear is actually been thrown out, is in order.

Well this kind of threw me off then.

I'm leaning towards agreeing with chaos. I think it may just be a bad starter or flywheel teeth missing, or maybe shims slipped.

When the security light is flashing on mine it's waiting to be armed, then when I lock the door it stays on constant until door is shut. Then when door is shut it goes off and alarm is armed. Does yours (security light) remain constant after shutting door?

But like Agent said, mines a different animal so I'm probably not much help....

I agree, if it was the alarm system or the VATS it should not turn over at all. Possibly a starer problem.

Auto Zone said the starter was good, solenoid was moving. Now my question is when they do this test is it (starter) under load like being in a car?? If not maybe the solenoid isn't moving while under load in car??

After locking the doors the light stays constant until you shut the door, then it goes out.

Can also def. hear the fuel pump ( I have 2, second one is behind license plate from ATI SC from before) and it is pretty loud so I know those are running.

I just also tried all 3 ignition keys I have, nothing.

The motor is not turning over, just the starter spinning.

Did not trying jumping it but will I guess, I'm not going to rule anything out at this point. I'm really bummed...I guess Monday I will call to see if I have towing...you know what's next after that...

I would hate to think it the flywheel as it has 75 miles on it.

If the starter is still out, have a look through the hole and see what the ring gear looks like.

If it was VATS or the alarm I'm pretty sure the starter would be dead, not trying to spin

Well yesterday I went back out and I actually got the alarm to go off. I guess it would be the Forced Entry system? I got in the car, turned the key to on positon then to off. Locked the doors using the power locks and shut door (drivers side) I waited then opened the manual lock on the driver's side and then opened door and it starting honking. Got out and put key in door and honking stopped. I did this same procedure before and it did not work, I swear the car is possessed!!

I would think that if it was some type of alarm issue at this point that the starter would not spin at all...can anyone verify for sure that either type of alarm when activated will cut off the starter all together????

A starter is $94.00 from Auto Zone I may get one and try it just for the heck of it to see what happens.

Since I got a new clutch/flywheel does anyone think that the shims for the starter or not needed anymore? Could it be possible that the starter is not lined up with the new flywheel??

I called auto zone and they stated there is a load on it when it is tested.

Your alarm works just like my 90's as I suspected. You have successfully ruled out VATS altogether now if you deactivated alarm with door key and car still would not start.

I think Auto zone means they put a load similar to the load of a motor on it to test the starters brushes and whatnot. A starter can test spin fine then not spin under a load. What they have not ruled out is your cars flywheel, starters alignment, shims ect.

My $$ is on one or more of those components. If starter tested fine under load then don't go throw your money away on new one. Check things mentioned on car side and I think you'll solve the problem.

Ordered starter but didn't get a chance to pick it up today. Auto Zone is pretty good, explained what happened and they said they don't understand it either but if it isn't the new starter to bring it back for a full refund. So it's not going to cost me anything.

Looking at the flywheel it looks like from what I can see that there is 1 tooth that has a nick on the side of the 1 tooth. I took the little shim out and tried it and still nothing. Just spinning.

Going to try the new starter within the next couple days when I get a chance.

Picked up new starter, didn't put it in yet. Took the dust cover off to look better at the teeth of flywheel, all looked good except for maybe 1 or 2 that were super shiney so they must have been nicked by the starter.

Not the best pic but thought I would throw it up anyway.
