lots and lots of brake cleaner and lots and lots of paper towels. seriously my car was up on blocks on a pier over San Francisco Bay. Using water, or any oil based solvent that could possibly run or be carried into the into the bay was not an option. Brake cleaner knocks all the crud loose and then very quickly evaporates leaving only the dirt to be wiped up. It worked very well for me; however keep the brake cleaner away from decals, etc.
