New computer on C4 - wrong odometer # - help?
I would very much appreciate anyone's help on what to do...
My mom passed last January. I got her C4 1992 Teal Corvette. My mom was the second owner, I the third, but same family. We had the same people (family friends) do the repairs always since she owned it.
In 2005, there were problems with the computer. It had to be replaced. The Auto Repair shop changed out the computer, but the odometer was never set to the "actual mileage". However, the Auto Repair shop wrote a letter documenting the mileage at the time of the transfer. It was changed at #76,854. Now the odo reads 19,656. I found a car that I wanted to trade it in for and made the deal with the dealer. When they received the car, they said it was a TMU - Total Mileage Unknown. This supposedly seriously affects the value of the car, whereby they only want to give me about 1/3 of the previous amount.
I have all the paperwork. I was floored to have them come back and tell me this. I called a Chevy dealer local that told me it could be fixed.
I am respectfully asking anyone if they know HOW to fix this? Although I cried giving my mom's vette away to a dealer. I knew she would be happy for me getting a newer car.
Please help? Thanks so much, Lisa
Good Luck!
New CCM's will allow for up to 100 miles to be put on the car by driving before the CCM effectively locks any updating capability out completely.
The shop that did the work should have known this as I would expect that detailed instructions would have come with the new CCM. And a competent technician should have known that most all newer cars have mileage data stored electronically. Had they looked at the odometer, they would have seen it was a digital display and not a mechanical wheel display.
They screwed up and they should be on the hook for all costs to fix the problem. The big issue now is that the car is "known" to the dealer where you want to trade it and they may never budge even if you have the CCM replaced again and have the accurate mileage programmed in.
When a car is traded or sold, federal law requires that the mileage appearing on the odometer be transferred to the new title. But this applies only to cars that are 10 years old or less. Your '93 is beyond this so an accurate figure won't have to be written down and I think theere is a place on the title for inaccurate mileage due to this type of problem. The dealer should know this. You can also contact your state's DMV for information on how the mileage statement works.
If you have made the deal, yu could also contact your state's Attorney General office. They should have a Consumer Protection section that can give you some information.
