If you have an Opti I wouldn't use the hose.....
Even if you don't, I still wouldn't use the hose. There is other things under the hood that do not like water.
If you have access to a compressor then you can blow out the coolant from all the areas you can't reach....
Use damp rags/towels, Simple Green and just start wiping away...
After a thorough wiping down, then use your favorite detailer, and your back to new.....
Good Luck

It doesn't get any simpler than that....actually, any more time consuming and difficult than that. Don't go at it with a hose....your Opti isn't going to like that....
I've been washing my engine/enginebay for years with a hose. I've never had an opti failure. The opti in my impala ss has more than 150 thousand miles on it with original cap and rotor........
Just don't hit the opti with a stream of water. (these cars run in the rain, no matter what that stupid little book said, your opti is not made of sugar and will not melt in water) any distributer will get water inside and misfire if hit by solid stream .

Oh for Petes sake!!
Spray a bottle of Simple Green everywhere.
Let it soak for 5-10 minutes and use a garden hose to flush off the grime.
Take it for a drive to blow off the excess water....

Count yourself lucky my Vette brother. I have gone through 3 Opti sparks in my 93 Trans Am, thought I must say it currently has 193,000 miles.

Gee I hate to break it to you guys but Mike happens to be right. Take the spray attachment off your hose and just use a gentle stream of water to rinse off what needs to be rinsed.
I clean my engine once a year with simple green and then rinse everything off with a hose. Here in Seattle it rains everyday for more than 6 months a year and my vette is a daily driver. With now over 100K miles I've never had an opti issue.
Just use a little common sense and don't spray pressurized water at the front of the engine. Actually there is no reason to use pressurized water at all within the engine compartment.
Personally, wash the engine carefully to not soak the opti. Keep the hood down, run engine (even if it misses) to bring the heat up and speed drying. Use a hair dryer or heat gun to dry the opti. Be patient, it will dry out eventually, probably.
I have cleaned the engine bay not only on my 95 coupe but also on my 95 LT1 Firebird for 5+ years now. Purple power and garden hose each time....has never failed me. Not to say that others haven't had problems, just speaking from my experience only.

93 has first gen opti not quite as good as 94 and up b-body and 95 up corvette/f-body optis.
My imp should hit 160K next month or so still on first opti and cap.
see Im not the only one
