Have a new to me 1985. In great shape except for the body panel under the battery. Big discoloration. Looks like a battery might have leaked at one time or another. Anyone had this problem??? What's the best way to correct it? Thanks for any help.

There is not panel damage. Just didn't know if I should use some sort of anti acid wash or something before sanding and rattle can.

Wash it with Dawn dishwashing soap.. Mean Green or purple power work better for hard cleaning jobs, but leave a film that will need Dawn to wash it off. lol
After you wash it, sand it with 320G sand paper. Prime it with a sandable primer and find some dupi-color that matchs and paint it, And clear coat it if you wish. It wont look as good as a factory finish but with it that low on the body it wont be as noticeable as say the Hood.

I had a 3 X 6 inch scratch on the bottom front of my 96 from running up against a curb.(in front of the drivers side wheel above the front spoiler) I just used the rattle can primer, dupi-color paint & clear coat. It turned out great. I showed my dad where I painted it and he couldn't tell what had been re-painted. I'm sure a body shop would've charged $$$$$ to fix the scratch. If I were you I'd try this way first and see how it looks. You'll save a lot of money. My vette has taken enough of my money this year.

Dish soap will do, its just to take off the dirt and grease prior to sanding. Otherwise you end up with an uneven sand job and the grease remains smeared around, which weakens the paint bond.
Also, you might check what base of paint is currently on it. I don't recall which, but two bases will not mix and will cause a peeling or webbing effect when applied on eachother. Someone else might be able to answer that I think it's either lacquer and enamel or lacquer and urethane. In that case you'll have to sand through to the base coat of the deepest paint job or use the same base in spray.
