I have been having some trouble with my 1984 starting after it gets hot, it starts after it cools down and was going to try a heat shield. Bought one from Eckler's after talking to a guy about putting it on and it wouldn't even fit. He said I could just put another set of nuts on the bolts without taking the starter off. There is no way it will fit over the wiring in my opinion and was not wide enough to fit the starter cover bolts and the solenoid at the same time. I guess I will try some muffler wrap, that should be easy enough and be good for other reasons too, my oil temp gets 260 if I am driving really hard, will be buying a new starter eventually and using synthetic oil, also I would like an oil cooler probably, comments on an oil cooler?
Replace your starter forget about heat shield they won't help a weak sarter.
I had the same problem while back, and I replaced the starter and never had the problem again. Don't waste your time on heat shield, problem is the starter.
The basic logic was that a heat shield might help for a little while, and yes I would have to buy a new starter eventually, but I thought the heat shield would be a good thing for a new starter too. I'm thinking the same thing about the muffler wrap!
