I will be leaving in FEB and headed for Heidelberg first but from there im not sure. Let me know if you get orders
I do plan on documenting everything with pics and video beause your right you need the added insurance if you need to file a claim. I am going to get my new fuel pump this week--interested in coming over and assisting
Give me a call when you're ready to do the install.... I'm not doing much
You should have lots of fun on the Autobahn with your Vette.
Just remember one thing. The left lane is only for passing and
you have to watch your rear view mirror for the highbeam signal.
That means get out of my way! Cars will pass you at over 200 kmh!
Hope you won't find the gas too expensive.
To the OP, How's the 101 doing" I was there in the 502 from 82 to 85. Actually it was the 501 until they went to the regimental system in about 84 I think.
if you take this advice all you can do is ship it and pick it up. It may have damage it may not. I never shipped a car (another story) but of the ones I know who did I never seen or heard of anything major
Have fun, you'll love Germany.
I love the 101st, wish I didnt have to leave but I knew the day would come. We just got a new Commander and he sounds like a no nonsense kind of guy but one that cares about his Soldiers at the same time.
I went to basic in 82--lol but I have been here since 2001, (I got to meet GEN Petraus when he was in Command and he reenlisted me back in 03--or 04, Hell I cant remember Im old

The 101st was the most rewarding assignment I ever had. Air Assault school, rappell master school, marksmanship instructors course, PNCOC, jungle warfare training in panama, artcic combat training in Alaska. And some more I have forgotten.
Then Uncle Sam decided to mess it all up and make me a recruiter. Then I messed it up more and decided to stay a recruiter because of a now ex wife.
I wish I would have went back to combat arms where I belonged. But oh well.
When I left Germany I had to leave my Roadrunner over there because of a paperwork thing. They were just going electronic and I had a temp registration and they would not let me ship it with a temp for whatever reason. I bought it from a guy who purchased it brand new and had it shipped over. The thing was mint as the original owner was very **** about his car. I am still peeode about, even from 1982.
I am headed to germany in Febuary and want the Army to ship my Vette, any military out there with any experience/advice as to what to expect. I really dont want my car to end up in the Atlantic Ocean or torn up on the way.
Some friends from Fort Sill got sent to Hawaii and ALL of there household goods were dropped in the ocean and shipped and delivered to them anyway.
I've shipped military 4 times: once to Germany, once back, once to Hawaii and once back. Two out of three times, had damage, but the Army payed well in repairs. Only GM dealership is in Frankfurt (or was when I was last there. Pray u don't need parts shipped from the US, as it is very expensive. Bremerhaven is point of pickup. Ur battery will most likely be dead, but they have a charger and we give u a lil gas to get er started. ur car will have to pass the German TUV, which is their version of inspection. You'll also have to get an international license to drive before u pick it up, but I suppose u've already been briefed on tha by transportation. When I was there, they didn't have unleaded gas, so u had to have ur catalytic converter removed or risk burning it up. That may have changed (was last there in '85) Also had military issued gas coupons to help with gas prices, as off post gas is sky-high. That's sorta like class 6 Autobahn is overrated, as even in 85 there were more speed zones (100-120kph) than not and they really like their speed cameras!! Did love their curvy roads though!! Ur car WILL be dirty and dusty when u 1st see it in the lot, so be prepared. Hope this helps. PS If u see my ex there, tell er she still suks!! J.K. Tom

Maybe I'll see you in Germany, I'm trying to get order for Germany. Good Luck!!
sounds like really good advice!
I was there in 1967-70. all I got to drive was an m60 tank! would've LOVED to have my c4 there now!

Good, there is plenty to do in the Heidelberg area. You'll end up meeting Cecil Davis and he is the head of the German American Corvette club based out of HD. I'm still part of the group and chat with them from time to time. Cecil is a good guy and he'll more then likely will leave a card on your door if you drive the vette to work! You'll have plenty to do. You HAVE to go to lemans. I regret not going while i was living there and it's a blast. Cecil and the gang plan a lot events outside of Germany so there will be tons of stuff to do. It's kind of slow around the winter months but they still try to meet up once a month.

That sounds awsome, I will look them up when I get there. Thanks for the info. What exactly is Lemans?
get ahold of the local corvette club over there. I went on a MAC flight with my parents (im 20) and I got ahold of the club over there and they offered to arrange a meeting just for me, set up a little cruise down the Autobahn, and lunch. They are so welcoming and ready to help. The club coordinator's english wasn't so great, but he was trying to get the point across that they love having visitors from the US. As far as shipping it goes, I've heard (and I dont know if it's the same with the military shipping and you probably can't even request it) but I've heard that you want your car to be on top of the shipping container. Here's why- what if someone else's car is leaking oil?? Well now that oil is all over your car. Best of luck to you bud, and like others have said-- Thank You for keeping this the land of the free. Thank You for allowing us to have a corvette forum and for protecting our freedoms and liberties that we enjoy.
It shouldn't be too bad I shipped my Vette from Italy in '05. It had one scratch that wasn't there before. Do a good detail/wax before taking it to get inspected as they will mark every flaw on the car. It was dirty when it finally got here 45 days later but they washed it before handing me the keys.
You will love driving the Vette over there the speed limit is 85mph or 140kph on most highways. GREAT place to drive the Vette!
Im holding out on reenlistment for germany. Im determined to take the vette but a gang of spare parts is on the packing list if it happense.
when you get there let us know how it is hopefully ill be following next year oh remember USPS has a bigger flat rate box for shipping to APO addresses. same price but you can jam more **** in it. im sure if you get in dire straights for parts a forum member might be able to hook it up.
