I am headed to germany in Febuary and want the Army to ship my Vette, any military out there with any experience/advice as to what to expect. I really dont want my car to end up in the Atlantic Ocean or torn up on the way.
Some friends from Fort Sill got sent to Hawaii and ALL of there household goods were dropped in the ocean and shipped and delivered to them anyway.
Ouch! I would hope that if MAC can drop a Hummer into a hot LZ they could at least plant a vette on the tarmac in GB. Jeez! Thanks for your service!! You are my hero!

You might want to try and sell it while there. I helped a Forum member buy and ship a C3 last year to Belgium. There is quite a following of American cars in Europe. They get together and have USA car shows with lots of displays of Old Glory.
The Euro buys a lot over there so they think of your car as a bargain.
My Army Reserve unit spent a month there back in the 80s. Our trucks were governed to 100kph. Everything (including superbikes) just flew by like jets on the autobahn!

I had a Major from the Airforce come in work the other day. I said to him are you in MAC or SAC. He looked at me and laughed and said his father was in MAC. You must be as old as me.
Are you going to be stationed out there? PCS? if so you need to talk to your travel department they should be the ones to take care of that. If you are staying there for a long period of time then the Military should pay for it all as well.
I am going to PCS and they will pay for it, I just hope they dont screw it up--we are talking about the Army ya know--no I was just looking for any precautions I may need to take

Been to Germany once, but it was just a layover in Germany
I am REALLY looking forward to that, can never open it up here -there are always cops lingering around.
I have been all over the world but mostly stuck in airports as well, Korea, Kuwait and Iraq are the only places I got to actually see.
I had my cars shipped over the pond, and never had damage, but it was dirty when I picked it up, so look close for damage, it will be hard under dirt.
Have great tour, and enjoy, and there is big Corvette club that does lot of thing, so do a search.
Thank you for keeping my freedom, and defending our right.
I've shipped MANY cars to germany. Serveral when i was living there in 2003 to 2005 and in 2007 i shipped my C4 back to germany for Lemans 2007 for a three week vacation.
I have pics here from my 2007 trip. I need to update the site and check the grammar but haven't had time since! Most of what I posted was using a cell phone over there or cyber cafe with dial up. barf.
IM me if you have any questions about shipping your car(s).
I assume you are going as military vs contractor or Civ? Where will you be stationed?
Hey Soldierboy... The best thing is to detail your car with a fine tooth comb few days before you take your care to the shipping depot. Also before you ship the car take pictures and video of your car's interior, exterior, and a video of the car running. this is added insurance if you ever have to file a damage claim.
Maybe I'll see you in Germany, I'm trying to get order for Germany. Good Luck!!

Looks like you had a great time, I hope there are plenty of events to get involved in while i am there, I am doing a 2 year tour without the family and need plenty of distractions

Good advice.
To the OP, How's the 101 doing" I was there in the 502 from 82 to 85. Actually it was the 501 until they went to the regimental system in about 84 I think.
if you take this advice all you can do is ship it and pick it up. It may have damage it may not. I never shipped a car (another story) but of the ones I know who did I never seen or heard of anything major
Have fun, you'll love Germany.

You should have lots of fun on the Autobahn with your Vette.
Just remember one thing. The left lane is only for passing and
you have to watch your rear view mirror for the highbeam signal.
That means get out of my way! Cars will pass you at over 200 kmh!
Hope you won't find the gas too expensive.
