Regarding the targa tops. Anybody know when the targa top mounting hardware changed? I have an 88. If I buy a newer model targa top...say 91-92 will I need different mounting hardware?. Seems I saw some aftermarket hardware to mount newer tops to older cars...Anyone know who sells the hardware???
See above 88 was the break year between the last generation top. Take a look at what you currently have on the car as you may not need the brackets but if its the correct 88 top for your car then you will need to go to the later models or 89-96 brackets.
Sources? Vette2vette.com, Ebay or a member here who has a trashed top or a frame seperation etc and may part with the brackets for theirs.

Along the lines of this thread, I have a question. The hardware on the front of my 96's targa seems to be
a.)liberally coated with what appears to be a graphite-based grease,
b.)the plates held in by the allen screws are very loose.
The targa itself has several cracks that to my untrained eye appear to be stress related. Could the grease and the loose fitting hardware be an attempt to allow the targa more freedom to move and subject to less torsion, while at the same time adding to the cacophny of rattles?

The top should not rattle, and no grease is needed. My advice is to park on a LEVEL surface, install the top with the back tilted in first. Wiggle the front edge until the front bolts are easy to start by hand. Then start the rear bolts. Tighten down the front bolts. And finish by tightening the rear bolts.
If you think about it, the front bolts up vertically and the back horizontally. When you tighten the rear you are stressing the windshield and strengthening the frame.
What's loose and covered in grease are the plates that the front verticle bolts are screwed in to. The plates slide around and are not always in alignment, making the task of putting the targa back on a little more time consuming (and even less cool looking because no matter where I decide to put the top back on, an audience seems to magically appear.)
