I was in a pinch last year and needed a new Master & Slave cylinder in my '88. I was stuck in a different town on a Sunday and AAMCO was the closest place. I couldn't change gears so I was stuck in 1st
Its been 3,000 miles later and now the clutch pedal is almost as weak as a 1969 VW bug. The master clutch cylinder resivor was totally dry over the weekend. I filled it up, pumped the clutch a few times and no fluid dropped at all in the resivor. Clutch is still loose.
Question, should I go back to that AAMCO and ask if they can check for free to see if the master and slave cylinder is leaking? If its not leaking, should I ask them to bleed the lines? Seems like 3,000 is way too soon for the clutch to be acting up again?...
So would I, but since you paid for the repair at Aamco, you should take it back there (assuming the repair is still under the warranty period) and ask them to make it right.
But there really is no "if" there is a leak....a dry master cylinder means there is definitely a leak, and probably has been since day one when the did the repair (or, more accurately, didn't do the repair). And if it went dry, when the fluid left the premises, air took its place. You can pump the pedal until your leg has a seizure, and it won't change a thing until the leak is repaired and the system is properly bled. Air compresses....liquid doesn't. That's why your clutch isn't disengaging.
A leak of this magnitude left some clues. Start looking for where the fluid went AWOL. There isn't much to the system. Good luck.
I'd find a good vette mechanic that knows what he is doing. If you take it back to them they might screw up something else. Next thing you know they'll say you need a trans rebuild.
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I cringed having to take it to AAMCO, but I was SOL that Sunday afternoon. So my assumption was correct. AAMCO sucks and I have a leaking Master Cylinder. I'm going to see if its under warranty, but its not I think. I'll just take it to my mechanic that knows WTF they are doing.
