why would my alt. do this ?
it some how decided to eat its pulley / fan combo
and just realley grind that thing out.
so -
the alternator spins freely. actually it spins alot easier than I thought it would - so the only reason I could think of that would cause this would be maby just the pulley was bad from the start , or it was mounted on the alt . improperly.
this sucks. ive heard that pulleys for a 84 vette are verry small diam. to try and speed up the alt to make more power. is this true ?
also will I have a hard time tracking down the correct alt for my car with a correct pulley attached ?

The nut wasn't torqued properly, and here ya go a alt with a lifetime free replacement for under $100.00...

**** wears out, metal gets fatigued.
If you have the non threaded ear (pic looks like it)
Rockauto
REMY Part # 20107 {Reman}
with Unthreaded Adjusting Ear; 108 Amps
* Non-stock item--shipping delayed up to 2 business days
$77.79
Threaded ear:
REMY Part # 20211 {Reman}
with Threaded Adjusting Ear; 108 Amps
$97.99
both plus cores.
I would avoid the Autozone/Advance Auto/ Kragens alts like the plague.

When I first got my 87 vette, I was driving on a back road and suddenly I heard a bang, the dash lit up like Christmas eve, the steering wheel got very hard to turn and coolant temp instantly headed for the moon. My alternator pulley had been loose and it ate the alternator shaft into an hour glass shape until it bent over and threw the serpentine belt. Welcome to the club.

crazy man.
I ended up going to a bennette autto supply store in search of a new alt.
to wich they only had 108 amp models avalable - and proceded to tell me that thats all they were equiped with from the factory since thats what parts they have in the computer for them. - when the parts guy brought it out it had a v belt pulley on it. realley - a v belt ?
for a 84 corvette ? - I bet there is not a c4 in existance on earth with a v belt system on it.
luckly I was able to find a parts store down the road a bit with a box of random pulleys in it and found a match to my alt, and a slightly smaller one too - got it mounted up properly.
suprisingly - the same alternator is still in the car now and it works better than before.
probly because the pulley I put on is verry slightly smaller in diamater, wich will spin the alt a little faster at idle for more output at 700 rpm.
I wonder how long this old dirty alt will keep working before needing a rebuild - wich I also got a # to a local guy who is suposed to be good at rebuilding them - just incase my alt was fried somehow. Daily driving a 84 is wearing out the welcome fast.

Its easy to say I've not seen this problem before.
The shaft is probably fatigued, so replacing the alt is in order too.
