The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
Clearly, Jay Leno is a car guy, through and through. He knows a lot about every one of the hundreds of cars and bikes he owns. I have no doubt that guy could roll up the sleeves and turn a wrench with the best of us. From bikes to big American musclecars to exotic supercars to old '50s roadsters, he can tell you every quirk of the car as manufactured, and every quirk of his specific example. He is the rarest of creatures...a gear head with nearly unlimited funds to pursue his dream...he's more than just a collector; he's a car LOVER. I completely respect and envy that guy.
However, one of the things that came up in conversation is the "affair" we have with the cars we love. I used to be a Mustang guy, I owned a 1966 (my first car) and a 1986...I could tell you every bolt, every quirk, every nuance of those cars. They were my daily drivers, and I really bonded with both of those cars. I knew them both intimately, the way a man knows his wife, if that's not too strange of an example (and note that I said "intimately," not "biblically," haha).
After the Mustang, I bought a Miata and drove it daily for about 15 of the last 20 years (I've actually had 3 total, a 91, a 92, and an 02). I learned every nut and bolt, every quirk in how it drove, and modified it with those things in mind...lots of suspension upgrades to make a great handling car better, then engine work to make it faster. I think, at one time or another, I've actually turned every bolt on that car, no exaggeration.
Now I'm looking for a Corvette, my first, with that expectation in mind. Love the car, experience the car, enjoy and bond with the car. I doubt I could do that with more than one car, certainly no more than 2 or 3 cars at the most.
If you have ONE car, and drive it regularly, and feel passionate about it, it's very much like a marriage. Some days you hate it, most days you love it, but it's really the only way to APPRECIATE it. If you have 10 cars, or 100, I doubt you can really fall in love with more than one or two of them...like sleeping around, it's a fun life, but ultimately it has the potential to be unsatisfying.
I've always been passionate about my cars; I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to have a warehouse full of them, but I think it would actually take a lot of the pleasure out of the experience, at least for me.
JMO, yours may vary,
Dave
