first of all, my 1986 vette take a couple trys to start. once running, it powers up great and will get up to speeds fast. after five minutes of driving, i again try to punch it, and it won't get up to speed, it seems like it wants to cut off. this is when i will hear the fuel pump noise.:
next is that i have noticed that the right side carpet is a little damp under that floor mat. any advise?
Sounds like your fuel pump may be on it's way out. The pump is easily removed, through the top of the tank, under filler door.
Fuel pressure tests will help diagnose. Do you have a pressure gauge ?
As mentioned, the wetness could be the core leaking, or bad weatherstripping. Does the fluid have a sweet smell ?
My 86 is doing the same thing- and if I let it get below a half a tank it runs like crap- cuts out when I punch it. A few weeks ago, I let it get down to around 1/3 of a tank- and it ran slap out of gas on me- left me walking with the range on the digital dash saying I had over 100 miles range- Grrrrr.
I know I got to get into it and sort it out- I suspect I'm gonna have to do a new fuel pump and pickup- and replace any hoses and what-not in there. I got the money put aside, just haven't done it yet.
For you guys that have done it, is there anything I need to be particular about in there? Any particular brand/model pump I ought to put in it? The engine is stock L-98.
good day, replaced that fule pump, and when the tank gets to a half tank, it starts to studder and cuts off. last night i coasted to the gas station and filled it back up. it drove without any problems. could i have put the flot in wrong, or pump in backwards. or could i have another bad pump.

glennjr91 and Hbz, sounds like both of you may have inaccurate sending units. Mine is not much better, when it says 1/4 tank and I punch it, it starves for fuel. I keep my tank above 1/2 tank and live with it.

my GUESS is the pulsator is leaking...need pressure data...fuel pressure is the FIRST thing to check on all efi engines with driveability issues...harbor fright sells a pressure tester for under $20.
